An election day message: Dear Siena Saints, Today we will elect our local and national leaders by exercising our constitutional right to vote that has underscored the American democracy for more than 200 years.... No matter the outcome, we are called to respect the will of the people and the sanctity of our free elections. Let us continue to be a safe and supportive community of Saints. Let us continue to live and teach the value of respect for one another, prioritizing the dignity of every human being. This election season has been particularly polarizing. But instead of retreating to opposite sides of the divide, let us lean into the words of Pope Francis At a time when various forms of fundamentalist intolerance are damaging relationships between individuals, groups and peoples, let us be committed to living and teaching the value of respect for others, a love capable of welcoming differences, and the priority of the dignity of every human being over his or her ideas, opinions, practices and even sins. . . (Fratelli Tutti 191) Peace and good, Fr. Mark G. Reamer, '83 O.F.M., D.Min. Vice President for Mission

On June 19, 1865two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamationenslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas were told they were free. This is the origin of Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and a celebration of independence, freedom, human rights and civil rights. Tomorrow's also an important day to recognize that the work toward equality and justice is not finished. In the words of Saint Francis: let us begin ag...ain for up until now we have done little or nothing. President-elect Dr. Gibson echoed this sentiment at Monday's Bells (pictured here) of Remembrance prayer service, "There is so much more to be done. Pursuing justice, including racial justice, will be a priority for my administration." Dr. Gibson will hold town halls on strengthening the bonds of racial justice when he takes office in July. We thank all who've been sharing your experiences and ideas. Your insights are valuable as we continue to work toward positive change.

Siena College 23.07.2020

Please join our community for a prayer service to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God as we work to strengthen the bonds of racial justice on our campus and beyond. At this service, Siena will receive Bells of Remembrance as a gift from the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province. The first use of these historic bells on campus will be to:... - toll them in sadness for systemic racism in our society; and ring them as a call for justice. - toll them in grief for those we have lost to Covid-19; and ring them as a call to love tenderly. - toll them in sorrow for the ignorance and fear that led to the death of George Floyd and many others; and ring them as a call to walk humbly with God in memory and honor of compassionate leaders who serve their brothers and sisters. We will hear from Dr. Margaret Madden, Interim President, Fr. Kevin Mullen ’75, OFM, Minister Provincial of Holy Name Province, and Dr. Christopher Gibson ’86, President-elect. The service will conclude by pealing the bells in honor of the Class of 2020. Their class gift will fund the permanent installation of the bells on campus.

Siena College 19.07.2020

**Prayer service postponed** The Bells of Remembrance were expected to toll this afternoon at a special prayer service. Unfortunately, a mechanical failure this morning during transport has delayed their arrival from Wilmington, Delaware. As soon as the problem is fixed, the bells will complete their journey to Siena. Until then, and with great regret, this afternoon’s scheduled prayer service is temporarily postponed. The Bells of Remembrance were designed by Br. David Sch...latter ’72 to ring in honor of Fr. Mychal Judge, a chaplain for the New York City Fire Department who died in the line of duty during the September 11 attacks. The Bells have tolled at memorials from Manhattan to Boston always ringing to remember. Soon, they will toll at a rescheduled prayer service on campus with a renewed purpose. The Bells will toll in sadness for systemic racism in our society; and ring for just and right relationships. The Bells will toll in grief for those we have lost; and ring in universal love. The Bells will toll in sorrow for the arrogance that has caused death of George Floyd and so many others; and ring in response to God’s call for humility. On Friday, Interim President Margaret Madden, Ph.D. sent a letter to the Siena community inviting all to participate in a prayer service for peace, justice, and humanity. The Bells of Remembrance were forged in the wake of terror and are being relocated to Siena during a new reckoning with racial injustice in our country. Soon, those Bells will ring out on campus as we pray for strengthened bonds of social justice. Hopefully you are able to join in that prayer through the live stream on the College’s Facebook page. Br. David will personally transport the bells to campus as soon as possible, and a new date for the prayer service will be forthcoming. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by this delay. The health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of our fragility and our limits. In recent days, the horrific death of George Floyd exposes the ongoing virus of racism, America’s original sin, which inflicts hatred, violence, and death in our society and in the lives of far too many people. As Saint Francis teaches us, the inseparable bond of all creation cries out for just relationships leading to true peace. The systemic racism in our society must be co...nfronted, especially among people with differing perspectives. There is an encouraging example in Francis of Assisi's meeting with the Sultan of Egypt, Malik al-Kamil, over 800 years ago. The men embraced out of respect for one another and entered into genuine dialogue, seeking peace and reconciliation in a time of conflict and division. As a Franciscan college, we are called not only to take part in this dialogue, but to be agents of change. As Saints, we must strive to embody the vision and values of St. Francis of Assisi: faith in a personal and provident God, reverence for all creation, affirmation of the unique worth of each person, delight in diversity, appreciation for beauty, service to the poor and marginalized, a community where members work together in friendship and respect, and commitment to building a world that is more just, peaceable, and humane. This is not easy and we will surely stumble. But, Saints don't shy away from what's difficult. And we never stop learning.

Holy Week message from the Friars: Back on Ash Wednesday, no one could have predicted everything we would "give up" for Lent. During this time of heightened stress, we hope you are taking care of yourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. While there is much that we can’t do to change this situation, we can be spiritually present for one another. ... To that end, we invite you to follow the Siena Friars page, where we will celebrate Holy Week. This will include a live stream of Easter Mass from the friary at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Fr. Kevin Mullen will preside.

Siena College 08.04.2020

A message from Siena's friars: In a time of darkness and uncertainty in his life, Francis of Assisi prayed this simple prayer before the crucifix in the church of San Damiano in Assisi, Italy a replica of this cross is in all the classrooms of Siena. Might it be a prayer for all of us as we journey together through this time of uncertainty. Most High... glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me, Lord, a correct faith, a certain hope, a perfect charity, sense and knowledge, so that I may carry out Your holy and true command. Many things have been cancelled because of the coronavirus. God’s love for us is not one of them! Though we cannot attend Church Services as usual, the friars again invite you into their chapel (virtually!) to be reminded of God's love. They'll be live at 11 a.m. on Sunday on their newly created Facebook page: Siena Friars.

Siena College 26.03.2020

This is not the news we'd hope to share. We can no longer reasonably hope that the threat presented by the coronavirus will subside by the Easter holiday. We have no choice but to continue with our distance learning model for the remainder of the spring semester and pursue unconventional arrangements for Commencement and Senior Week. Each member of the community has been asked to sacrifice, to adapt, to make the best of a situation unimaginable just a couple of months ago. W...e will emerge from this temporary reality stronger because of it. Our resilience has already proven that. The Siena campus will be reenergized with all of the life and activity we cherish so much. The time will come for all of us to celebrate a new beginning together. Commencement and corresponding events for the senior class will tentatively be held the weekend of Saturday, August 15. Class of 2020: We won’t let you leave Siena without having your moment, one that’s worthy of the mark you’ve left. Please check your email and the coronavirus website for more details.

Siena College 14.03.2020

Dear Saints, Our hearts go out to each and every one of you. We know that right now, you’re dealing with a whole host of emotions. While nothing we say can change the current course of events, we do want to try to give you some peace, some hope, and some assurance on our first day of remote instruction. What’s the one word that all Saints use to describe Siena? Community. And now more than ever, community is what we need. Take comfort knowing that no matter whatdespite our... distancethe bonds between Saints cannot be broken. Siena is far more than the collection of buildings that make up this beautiful campus. While we didn’t expect the semester to take this kind of turn, we’re already working hard to make sure your virtual experience is smooth and enjoyable. In the meantime know that we miss you all. We care about you. And we’re thinking of you. In these unsettling times, one thing is for sure: Our community is no less strong because it’s temporarily virtual. We’re in this together, we’ll get through this together, and we’ll find a way to celebrate at the end of this unfortunate disruption, together. , Siena

Siena will move to a remote instruction format Monday, March 23 through Wednesday, April 8. We do this with hope that the coronavirus disease is contained by the end of the Easter holiday and students will be able to finish the academic year together, with classes resuming on campus Tuesday, April 14. In the meantime, with the number of people testing positive on the rise in New York, including in Albany County, the risk is simply too high for students to return to campus. ...We understand the disappointment students, faculty, and staff feel right now, but the well-being of our students and community will always be our first concern. Thank you for your patience, grace and understanding as we navigate this evolving health event. Information about picking up items from residence halls, helping students and faculty adjust to online learning, billing, support services and much more is available here: siena.edu/coronavirus

Siena College 04.02.2020

Siena's spring break has been extended by one week. With students and community members traveling nationally and internationally this week, there is a heightened risk of exposure to the coronavirus disease. While there have been no cases of coronavirus on campus, nor have any students, faculty or staff reported symptoms, this extension will allow the College to better monitor and evaluate the outbreak's progress. The safety of our community is the number one priority. More information is available at the website below (which is also where all updates with be posted).
