SITU 01.01.2021

Today, SITU Research and Human Rights Watch release The Trap: a visual investigation into the police tactics used against protesters in The Bronx on June 4, 2020. Through the digital modeling of the urban context and analysis of over a hundred citizen videos, we were able to examine how the police leveraged the built environment in a carefully planned operation to trap protesters and terminate the peaceful assembly. Once the 8 p.m. curfew arrived, the use of force intensif...ied. Over 60 protesters were injured and 263 arrested. The reconstruction of this event makes clear that the issuance of a city-wide curfew combined with the planned effort to neutralize this public assembly led to an unnecessarily violent and repressive result. This sets a dangerous precedent for how we think about the right to assemble and protest in New York City and beyond. Since late March, our team has been working with frontline healthcare providers to rethink and refine our design for a safer #COVID19 testing booth. Leveraging our in-house fabrication capabilities, we’ve developed a few different prototypes that meet different cost, durability and transportation needs, based on real-time feedback from medical practitioners and other testing personnel. The variety of booth options is part of our modular approach to creating testing centers. By offering options for easy customization, the system can quickly be built in all kinds of indoor and outdoor spaces across the city, which could make testing more accessible to all New Yorkers. SITU 30.11.2020

In May 2018, Nicaraguans gathered in record numbers to protest against their government. Violence ensued, and eight protesters died. Today SITU and Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense - EAAF have released a video that reconstructs the circumstances around three of the protesters’ deaths. To build this event reconstruction, SITU’s research team developed a detailed digital model of the location where these three victims were mortally wounded. This virtual environment serv...ed as a base layer for situating visual and audio footage from witnesses, as well as a measurable three-dimensional context for ballistics analysis. Reconstructing the sequence of events inside this model revealed the likely source of the fatal roundsoriginating from police positions several hundred meters from the civilian barricades. While no single piece of evidence tells the whole story, the reconstruction provides a more complete understanding of how each civilian died. Despite substantial video evidence, two years later an official investigation has yet to be conducted. Even further, the Nicaraguan government introduced an official amnesty protecting police and others who may have committed acts of violence during this period.
