The first National Championship of Freestyle Skiing was held at Waterville Valley Ski Reaort in 1970 and was won by Hermann Goellner. Goellner was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1943. He was a young ski racing prodigy winning an Austrian Junior National Championship in 1960. Injuries would curtail his own racing career, but he came to Killington as a coach in 1964. Fooling around in Austria, Goellner learned to do a back flip on skis. So at Killington he worked on perfecting b...oth back and front flips. He attracted the attention of another ski instructor at Killington, Tom LeRoy. The two began working together and also probably pushing each other to try new jumps. Killington featured regular exhibitions by the two to entertain skiing visitors. This included side-by-side flips with Goellner doing a back flip and LeRoy a front flip. Hermann Goellner is now in his 70s, but still extremely fit. He is a world class climber who still tackles advanced climbs(5.10-5.12). He also can take credit for inventing and patenting the break-away slalom gate. (info from retro-skiing.com)

Edna Dercum, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants, was born in Minnesota and in 1936 became the first woman to join Professor Max Dercum's ski club at Penn Stat...e. She became chairperson for the first Penn State Championships (1940) and the state downhill and slalom champion (1941). Edna and Max later married. The Dercum’s moved to Colorado for good in 1945. Edna and Max became ski pioneers as they founded Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Keystone Resort. In addition to raising two children at the family's Ski Tip Ranch near Montezuma, Edna managed the lodge, served as county clerk, and taught skiing at Arapahoe Basin. About the time most people put away their skis, Edna got serious about ski racing. She decorated her mountain home partly with skiing medals, over 50 of them gold, and most of them earned as a senior-class racer. At age 65 Edna was the oldest competing woman in the National Seniors and had been its giant slalom champ since 1955. She continued skiing well into her 80s. #throwbackthursday

Tribute Tuesday Lowell Thomas Hall of Fame Class of 1978 Sport Builder Born in Ohio, Lowell grew up in Victor, Colorado, and got his start in journalism b...y editing two newspapers in that mining town. During World War I, Lowell first skied as a correspondent with the Italian Mountain Troops and got his first formal instruction during the 1932 Olympics at Lake Placid. Since then, he has skied his way around the world. His enthusiasm led to his involvement in launching two ski clubs and the National Ski Patrol, development of ski areas in America and Europe, building of the East's first chairlift, and promotion of skiing through over 50 years of news broadcasting ("So long until tomorrow"). Many of his programs originating from the ski areas he loved. Of all his ski adventures he cites as most memorable a trip by train and cage up through the Camp Bird Mine near Ouray, Colorado, to emerge far above timberline in Chicago Basin and ski all the way down, to the accompaniment of spring avalanches. No one has done more to publicize and promote Rocky Mountain skiing than Lowell Thomas.
