CURB participated in the 18th Annual Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor event, organized by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Participants from over 50 sites sampled the Hudson River, collecting valuable data on water quality and the health of the river. This was the first time that the event was held virtually, with live streams and videos recorded for participating schools. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Horl4e7o1I
Join in virtual celebration with the Lower Hudson Partnership as we raise a pint to the water quality stewards who fuel our community monitoring programs, and dig into the world of green infrastructure. This screening will kick off with a tasting and toast of beers from partnering Gun Hill Brewery and Captain Lawrence Brewery followed by the screening of film portions from Water Blues, Green Solutions and Stormwater Pollution & Green Infrastructure. The segments of the films ...highlight the question of how communities have successfully implemented green infrastructure. The event will conclude with a moderated panel discussion about Westchester County infrastructure with guests MaryJane Shimsky (Westchester County Legislator, 12th District), Oded Holzinger (Groundwork Hudson Valley), Rebecca Pryor (Guardians of Flushing Bay/Riverkeeper), and Emily Vail (Hudson River Watershed Alliance). Yesterday our staff had a busy day filming content for virtual lessons. They decided to wrap up the day with some Hudson River seining. This was our first time seining since the start of the pandemic and it was a great catch! Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY47k9Sioq8

Although the center is still closed to the public, the CURB staff are safely conducting science research along our local Yonkers rivers. As part of the Lower Hudson Partnership, we are collecting and sharing different #COVIDSafeEngagement protocols from different watershed groups in the tri-state area. It's been a busy week for CURB! We kicked off the first week of PEERS water sampling. Organized by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Professional External Evaluations of Rivers and Streams (PEERS) project partners with professional organizations that are collecting biological data to assess water quality in rivers and streams. For more information: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/105026.html. We were also on the Sarah Lawrence College campus to pick up video equipment for our fall virtual environmental education programs. Thanks to Brian in the AV office for helping us out!
Scary storm surge forecasts of up to 20 ft of water for the Texas/Louisiana coasts during Hurricane Laura. As sea level rise increases due to global warming, impacts from powerful hurricanes will continue to be enhanced for coastal locations.
