We offer a PhD position for a motivated and creative PhD candidate who wants to work at the forefront of palaeobiology integrating fossil data analyses and modelling approaches. The position is available from March 2018 for three years with salary defined according to the German E13/2 TV-L scale. The PhD candidate will be fully integrated in the successful and vivid research team of the Section Palaeontology at the GeoZentrum Nordbayern. Research in the sections aims at under...standing global change dynamics and the evolution of ecosystems on long temporal scales. We combine modern analytical methods and statistical analyses using large databases of ancient life. We have several ongoing projects on global diversity dynamics, macroevolutionary patterns and biotic consequences of temperature-related stresses and are among the main contributors and users of global biodiversity databases. The candidate will benefit from informal seminars, annual workshops and international summer schools of the Research Unit TERSANE (Temperature -related stresses as a unifying principle in ancient extinctions) that is hosted at the institution. We welcome a new PhD candidate with general interests in marine palaeobiology who is open to develop his/her project interacting with us. A possible research topic might relate to exploring intrinsic limits of diversification and/or the stability of macroecological patterns through deep time. Own project ideas are welcome. Applicants should hold a M.Sc. in palaeobiology or a related field. The successful candidate should have scientific writing skills and knowledge of advanced statistical methods and programming in R. Experience in analyses and mining of large fossil databases is required. Furthermore, the successful candidate has a strong interest and ability to work both independently and in our team. We explicitly welcome applications from abroad. There are no requirements of German language skills. For further information on the group visit https://www.gzn.fau.de/en/palaeontology/palaeoumwelt-home/ or contact Prof. Dr. Manuel Steinbauer ([email protected]) who will also receive your application in electronic form (including curriculum vitae, motivation/research statement, copy of selected publication/thesis). MS assistantship opportunity available with Dr. Jamie Roberts and Dr. Christian Cox at Georgia Southern University. The assistantship will focus on conservation genomics of freshwater mussels. M.S. Assistantship in Conservation Genomics A Masters assistantship is available in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University (GSU), with an intended start date in August 2018.The student will be expected to play a pivotal role and develop a thesis project on the conser...vation genomics of North American unionid mussels. Briefly, this project (funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and GSU) will develop high-throughput genomic resources (development of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci and genomic assays) to characterize the genomic diversity of imperiled mussel species in North Carolina. This research is a joint endeavor of the Cox and Roberts laboratories at GSU. The successful applicant will become enrolled in the Master’s of Biology program at GSU and complete course work and an M.S. thesis, leading to an M.S. degree in Biology. The assistantship includes a tuition waiver and stipend for two years, to be funded through a combination of teaching and research duties. The student also will assist in the field and lab activities of other members of the Cox (http://www.coxevolab.org/) and Roberts labs (http://www.southernfisheries.org). More information about the graduate program can be found at the Biology department’s web page (http://cosm.georgiasouthern.edu/biology/graduate-program-2/). GSU is a 27,000-student comprehensive research university located in one of the most biodiverse regions of the southeastern U.S. (http://www.georgiasouthern.edu/). JOB OPPORTUNITY PhD student sought for an NSF funded project to study landscape evolution and geomorphology in Antarctica. Collaborative Research: Long Term Sublimation/Preservation of Two Separate, Buried Glacier Ice Masses, Ong Valley, Southern Transantarctic Mountains; Jaakko Putkonen: University of North Dakota, Daniel Morgan: Vanderbilt University, and Greg Balco: Berkeley Geochronology Center. The graduate research requires travel and work in Antarctica for a period of... about two months. The home institution for the student will be the University of North Dakota, Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering, Grand Forks, ND. However, he/she will be advised and will be collaborating with all the project leaders listed above. Also, travel between institutions may be required. The major challenge of this project is determining how old the ice is and how fast it is subliming (or accumulating). We will address this by collecting six shallow (10 m long) ice cores three from each of the two separate, buried ice bodies and applying several approaches based on cosmogenic-nuclide geochemistry to constrain the age of the ice and overburden, as well as the sublimation rate of the ice. The specific tasks of the student: will learn to process cosmogenic isotope samples and build, manipulate, and run MatLab codes. Must be eager and able to do field work in deep back country, living in a tent for an extended period of time. Any experience with these topics is beneficial for the applicant. More information on the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering can be found: http://engineering.und.edu/geology-and-geological-engineer/ Link to applications page: http://graduateschool.und.edu/future-students/index.cfm We will start reading the applications as soon as they arrive and make our decision no sooner than 3/1/2017. After that date we will accept applications until the position is filled. For more information contact: Jaakko Putkonen, telephone 701-777-3213, [email protected] See more
