Spafford Fire Dept

It's with great sadness to report the passing of Past Chief of Spafford Fire Department and Town of Spafford Fire Commissioner Earl Shoemaker. Earl was Chief in 1965. He then became a Fire Commissioner later in the eighties. While as a Fire Commissioner he was instrumental in helping to bring the district up to standards with fire equipment. He was a also a close ally for the Spafford Fire Department. He may be gone but will not be forgotten.

Today we had a call that goes under "Ive seen it all" catagory. Fire control paged a Chief to call. I gave them a call and the Dispatcher tells me that a lady called and said her cat had got its tail wound up in the Christmas tree. At first I was speechless, but I got the info from her and told them I would respond to the residence. On my arrival sure enough the cat was wound up tight into the artificial tree. I called FC back and asked them to activate the station. On t...he arrival of Rescue-1 with three Firefighters. We were able to free the kitty by cutting away the wires and rotating the tree from around its tail. The only casualty was a bite on my finger from the cat. Just goes to show teamwork and patience can over come a situation. The cats owner and the little ones there watching were ever grateful. I wish I had pics, but we were a little busy. See more

NYS in it's infinite wisdom has cut front line EMS workers out of the first distribution of the vaccine for Covid. There first priority is "high risk EMS workers. Which is where I thought Fire/EMS was to begin with along with the ER doctors and nurses. We usually get there first and make a determination on the patients condition. We are in patients houses and dealing with family members who might be carriers of the disease. We use all the precautions needed but sometimes that doesn't work. Fire /EMS needs to sound off on this, and fast.

Rough night for trucker. Borodino and Spafford Firefighters were called out for a MVC overturned tractor trailer. On arrival truck was found on its side. The driver and passenger were transported to area hospitals with non life threatening injuries.
