Pretty much common sense but it’s also a law in NY. Dead grass, brush, leaves, sticks etc from winter are dry and burn rapidly. Don’t burn piles of leaves, bru...sh or other debris. It not only endangers acres of forest or fields, but endangers nearby buildings, vehicles, or property. https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/124884.html

DID YOU KNOW?!?! Open burning is the single greatest cause of wildfires in NYS. Since the spring burn ban was implemented in 2009, the number of wildfires has d...ecreased by more than 40%. Open burning is prohibited in NYS, with several exceptions: - Campfires or any other outdoor fires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed. - Small cooking fires are allowed. - Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed. Disposal of flags or religious items in a small-sized fire is allowed, if it is not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation. - Only charcoal or dry, clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned. - Fires cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished. The New York State burn ban is effective March 16 through May 14. Additional information is available from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation here: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/32060.html.

URGENT! If you have a furnace that vents to the outdoors through a pipe in the side of your home, it's vital that you clear it of snow! If blocked, not only i...s efficiency compromised but carbon monoxide can quickly fill a house creating a life threatening hazard. We've taken a couple calls this morning already for CO in the home. You may think that because Speedsville is a rural community, that we are at a lower risk than others in the ‘city’. Not so! There are positive cases here and I (as well as everyone in my house) am one of them. We thought we were doing all the right things, masks, gloves, 6’ distance. But this is a very sneaky disease and is very easily transferred. Who-how-where we got it is a mystery and it really doesn’t matter at this point. Some of us are experiencing minor symptoms (like a bad cold or the flu) others have none (like me). Our Community will get through this but I’d prefer it be with ALL of our residents. Be vigilant, be safe, and take care of each other. Wear a mask, use sanitizer, wash your hands, stay 6’ apart. It’s not difficult

It is with extreme sorrow that the McLean Fire Dept announces the passing of life member Michael P Totman. Mike was a past EMT, past Chief, current company Pre...sident, and current Chairman of the Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners. He held many positions and gave countless hours to both the department and the fire district. Mike had worked for both Bangs Ambulance and Tompkins County Dept of Emergency Response as a dispatcher and then doing communications installations. He was a firm believer in community and served in many positions throughout McLean organizations. Mike’s passing leaves a huge hole in both the community and the hearts of his fire department family. We will share additional details as they become available.
