Gem 1889 Three-Dollar Gold Piece Featured in our November 2020 Showcase Auction By James McCartney, Senior Numismatist and Consignment Director The mintage for the 1889 $3 gold piece was just 2,300 coins all delivered in December, down more than 50% from the previous year's total. It was the final circulation-strike for the denomination and only about 200 to 250 Mint State examples can be accounted for, along with 100 to 130 circulated pieces. Among the Uncirculated examples,... most grade no finer than MS-64. We are delighted to feature a superior MS-65 (PCGS) in lot 9172 of our November 2020 Showcase Auction. Housed in an Old Green PCGS Holder, it is exceptionally well preserved and attractive, with highly lustrous surfaces and an intense satin frosted finish. Modest reflectivity in the fields enhances the strong eye appeal. Sharply struck with vivid rose-gold patina, finding another coin as nice as this one will require significant patience. This Gem 1889 $3 is being offered in lot 9172 our November 2020 Auction and is pedigreed to the Monterrey Collection of U.S. Type Coins. The Monterrey Collection is a fresh, new-to-the-market collection that was assembled over the second half of the 20th century and held privately for decades. This spectacular cabinet is highlighted by a complete set of Proof Morgan dollars (previously housed uncertified in a Capital Plastics frame), as well as an array of iconic type coins and key-dates including an MCMVII High Relief double eagle, a 1799 Capped Bust Right $10, and an 1856 Flying Eagle cent. While many of these coins were submitted for grading for the first time in recent weeks, others are housed in Old Green PCGS and Old No-Line NGC holders. We certainly anticipate considerable excitement over the Monterrey Collection when it crosses the auction block. The entire Stack’s Bowers Galleries November 2020 sale is now available for viewing and bidding at www.StacksBowers.com. If you would like to consign to a future Showcase event or have questions about the consignment process, contact us today at [email protected] or 800-566-2580.

The German Princess who became a Russian Empress By Jeremy Bostwick, Senior Numismatist and Cataloger Much like another female ruler some two centuries prior (Elizabeth I in England), an empress in Russia would oversee great national growth in both land and power, and have a "golden age" associated with her reign. What is different, however, is that this ruler wasn't native to the land in which she would eventually rule. Born in what is now Germany to the Prince of Anhalt-Zer...bst in 1729, Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste was ennobled, though of modest means overall. She received a proper education with no regard to her gender and spent her youth playing the role of a tomboy rather than that of a German princess. In a boon to the fortunes of her family, she became betrothed to Peter, the heir to the Russian throne and the grandson of Peter I (the Great). She married the young prince in 1745. Scarce 1941 Panama P-23a 5 Balboas By Christopher Dahncke This Panama P-23a 1941 5 Balboas note in a PMG Very Fine 20 grade makes an excellent pairing with the Panama 10 Balboas note described in the blog from last week. Both will be featured in our January 2021 World Paper Money Auction. Notes from Panama are quite scarce, and PMG’s population report states that just 12 examples of this pick variety have been encapsulated by their service. Deep color from the blue and purple... under-print and orange guilloche give way to a solid impression of the primary design. The vignette at left is of Cacique Urraca, who was an Ngäbe Amerindian chieftain who fought against Spanish conquistadors in the early 1500s. The reverse displays detailed lathe work, with Arms at center. PMG Comments Corner Missing, regarding the upper left corner. It is a scarce note, and we expect to see spirited bidding on this lot. The Stack’s Bowers Galleries January 2021 Sale (an officially sanctioned auction of the NYINC) will take place January 15-16, 2021. To consign your World paper money to this exciting event, contact a consignment specialist at 800-458-4646 or visit StacksBowers.com. @stacksbowers is thrilled to offer a nice selection of gold coins in the November 2020 Rarities Night sale. Here are a few of the lots we will be selling. These lots can be found at stacksbowers.com.

The 1813 $5 represented the first year of the Smaller Bust design for the Capped Bust coin. However, in this Type 2 design, there are more rarities than any other U.S. Coin. The 1813 is not as rare as some of the later years, but when elevated to MS-64, it becomes scarce. There are 63 coins graded MS-64 or higher (which seems like a lot), but they sell for $30,000+ each. @stacksbowers is excited to offer this one next month!

Wow, take a look at this Large Planchet Pine Tree Shilling! This coin is in an excellent state of preservation. The winner of this lot will be fortunate to add it to their collection!

Only 94 of the 1906 $20 Liberty gold coins were produced, and this one is tied for the second finest with 11 other coins. PCGS CoinFacts lists the value of this coin at $52,000, which is accurate when including the CAC sticker. This coin should do well at auction this coming month and should draw the attention of plenty of bidders.

@stacksbowers has so many stunning gold coins lined up for auction by the end of 2020 that we have to keep showing them off. Here is the 1801 $10 gold that had a mintage of 44,344. This mintage is the highest of any of the early Eagles and is the second most common date behind the 1799. But, in a grade of @pcgscoin MS-63 CAC, it's price jumps to $65,000. Who will be placing a bid on this coin when it crosses the block soon?
