COVID-19 testing is available to anyone who wants to be tested. However, we realize the different type of testing available can be confusing. PLEASE NOTE: For a list of locations offering COVID-19 testing on Staten Island please visit www.statenislandusa.com/covidtesting. Take a look at our graphic below for a better description of why, how and when molecular, antigen and antibody tests are recommended. All results should be discussed with your healthcare provider to determ...ine next steps based on your symptoms, if any. It is important we continue to protect ourselves by washing our hands frequently, practicing social distancing, wearing a face covering, and staying home if you're sick. And, please continue to be mindful of the symptoms of COVID-19: Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
To honor and pay tribute to those who have been lost too soon, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched an engaging visual memorial to their 136 employees, heroes who dedicated their lives to moving New Yorkers through the city and region, who died of COVID-19. Built around photographs shared by family members, the memorial was designed by MTA Arts & Design at the request of Sarah Feinberg, Interim President of MTA New York City Transit. It is entitled TRAVELS FA...R after a poem by Tracy K. Smith, former U.S. Poet Laureate, that was commissioned for this project and will appear in multiple languages at Subway stations in the city. The online version is accompanied by an original score of the same name by composer Christopher Thompson, which was also commissioned for the memorial. This special tribute involved many people in various disciplines including New York City Transit liaisons to the family, and in-house talent from marketing, web and digital content teams. The memorial appears as an eight-minute video running on 138 three-panel digital screens at 107 subway stations through Sunday, Feb. 7. Several MTA employees from Staten Island are included in this tribute: Venancio Diaz, Stuart Cohen, Kevin Rossiter, Robert Sarutto, Kiyoto Williams, and Gary Cherry. You can view the online memorial here: https://new.mta.info/covid-memorial

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. In our continuing health awareness campaign, we turn our focus to the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland, located in the front part of the neck below the Adam’s apple and shaped like a butterfly, makes hormones that regulate your metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. When your thyroid gland makes either too much or too little of these hormones, it’s called a thy...Continue reading
Today we remember the 6 million Jews who were killed during the horrific acts of genocide that came to end on January 27, 1945 when the Soviets liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Never forget.
Two historic votes were cast by Staten Islanders nearly a century apart: The first to consolidate with New York City on Nov. 6, 1894, and the second to secede on Nov. 3, 1993. At the time of the consolidation vote, Staten Island was separated into five towns and several incorporated villages with Richmond (today’s Historic Richmond Town) as the county seat. Lacking funds for capital improvements, the vote to consolidate was viewed as an opportunity to gain the financial resou...Continue reading
Following up a response to previous post on vaccinations, Staten Island has 6 Adult Care Facilities licensed by NYS: EGER HARBOR HOUSE INC HARBOR TERRACE ADULT CARE & ASSISTED LIVING LAKESIDE MANOR HOME FOR ADULTS, INC... MARINERS RESIDENCE, INC SUNRISE OF STATEN ISLAND THE BRIELLE AT SEAVIEW 5 out of 6 have started administering vaccinations at their site and had at least one vaccine clinic. The sixth has a date scheduled. The Esplanade and Island Shore are private facilities. The Esplanade told Borough Hall health Director Dr. Ginny Mantello on a call Friday that they have applied to the State for licensure but not yet received it. They think that the delay may be related to the pandemic. We have asked the Governor’s Office for assistance on this, as well as the possibility of establishing a pop up site at these two facilities once the vaccination supply starts rolling again. Meanwhile, Dr. Ginny has spoken with our local Long Term Care pharmacy partner Enexia/Vitacare and they are also willing to go to these sites and provide vaccines to staff/residents if they can get the doses from City or State DOH. Currently they are focusing on Group homes but will shift to helping with seniors next. As of today, they will have used up all the vaccines provided to them by DOHMH to vaccinate the group home staff/residents.
