This is the Record of John Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) Wendy Gilles, alto solo St. Bartholomew's Choir... Paolo Bordignon, Organist and Choirmaster This verse anthem, one of the jewels from the Tudor repertoire, sets a text from the Gospel of John in the Geneva Bible. "John" (whose record is being told) refers to John the Baptist and the text concerns his prophecy foretelling the coming of Jesus. The piece is divided into three sections, each beginning with a verse for solo voice, followed by the full ensemble echoing words of the verse. The five-voice accompaniment may originally have been played by a consort of viols. 1. This is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not the Christ. 2. And they asked him, What art thou then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. 3. Then said they unto him, What art thou? that we may give an answer unto them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. John 1:1923

What impresses me most over the years are people who have, over the long haul, learned that their giving does not so much change the organizations they give to, but rather, their giving changes them. -- "What is God’s", sermon preached by Bishop Dean E. Wolfe, Sunday, October 18, 2020. Listen (or listen again) to the entire sermon here.

The ceiling of the narthex at St. Bart's is formed of five pendentive domes lined entirely with mosaics designed by Hildreth Meière. These mosaics portray the Creation narrative as told in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis. The six days of creation are represented, each with its corresponding Biblical quotation. Here is the dome for the first day: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."

Join the Reverend Deborah A. Lee for a one-to-three minute recorded daily scripture-inspired meditation to encourage you as you embark upon your daily round.
