On this date in 1865, the last enslaved Black Americans received the news in Galveston, TX that they were free. Juneteenth is observed throughout the country as the end to chattel slavery in the US. Though Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Era would still be part of a continued fight for freedom, a fight that remains even to this day, it is an important thread in #APeoplesStory.
