Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, We have just made the difficult decision NOT to be open this Sunday, March 15, as well as next Sunday, March 22. Then we will reassess. The coronavirus has made its way to Yonkers, and it is not safe for any of us to be together in public spaces. Our planned program sponsored by the Urban Land Institute was cancelled at the last minute this past week, and the filming that was planned for this coming week has also just been cancelled. B...oth programs hope to return when things have calmed down. I will be away this week but will be available on my cell phone for pastoral emergencies (443 257 9963) and can pray with people. The office will be closed. I am pleased that there will be a live-streamed non-public service at 11 a.m. this Sunday, March 15 from The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine with our Diocesan Bishop Andy Dietsche preaching. The video stream may be accessed through the cathedral website (www.stjohndivine.org). My prayers are with you and all of us, those who are ill, their families and friends, and especially with our hospitals and nursing homes, first responders and care providers. May God watch over us all and hold us gently. And may we not lose faith. In the Book of Common Prayer, there are beautiful services for Daily Morning Prayer (p. 75) and Evening Prayer (p. 115), a well as the shorter Order of Service for Noonday (p. 103), which you might like to say on your own as a new Lenten practice. The rubrics in italics guide you and give you choices. When there are sentences for different seasons, choose Lent. The Service of Compline (p. 127), which is said at the end of the day, includes one of my favorite prayers: Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
