Father Fred's sermon of August 30th. Father Fred reminds us that it was Peter who was the only one who could correctly answer Jesus’ question, Who do you say I am? Peter knew He was the Messiah and became the rock of the church. But moments later, when Peter tells Jesus that He can’t be killed, Jesus tells him, Get thee behind me!, He calls Peter a stumbling block, thus making him a bump in the road, an annoyance. We see that Jesus’ compassion can be both tender and fi...erce. Why did this happen? Because Peter shifted from speaking God’s truth to speaking Satan’s lies. This can also be a problem for us. It’s important for us to get all of the information right and not just parts of it. During Jesus’ life, He had to continually show his Disciples what was right. They just never really got it. When our self-protective instincts kick in, that’s when we can become stumbling blocks. The concept of self-preservation is powerful, and it can have a profound effect on us. It even happened to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when He asked God to Take this cup from me. Jesus reminded us to take up our cross and follow Him. Many of those who did were crucified by the Romans. Even today, following Jesus may have consequences. Following The Way of the Cross is a choice of what kind of life we want to live. Sometimes, in trying to save our lives, we may lose our souls. Peter failed the choice and became a stumbling block. We may answer the question, Who do you say Jesus is? and take up the Cross.
