SCAM ALERT The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office recently received a report of a ongoing phone scam. The original phone call was received from a local phone number, stating that the person owed a balance on their Amazon account. The caller requested updated credit card information in order to pay the balance. A short time later, the complainant received a 2nd call from another unknown number. The caller then advised the complainant that they had received a phone call f...rom the complainants number, also requesting credit card information for an owed Amazon balance. It is believed that the scam artists are "spoofing" local phone numbers in an attempt to defraud individuals. "Spoofing" allows the scam artists calls to appear as if they're coming from a local phone number, in an attempt to entice the recipient to answer. It is important to be cautious of unsolicited calls from unknown callers, even in the caller ID information appears local. You should never provide personal or financial information to unknown callers. Anyone with any questions or concerns should refer to their online Amazon account or contact Amazon Customer Service. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, you can contact the Sheriff's Office at (315)379-2222. See more
