Evensong for the Nation Wednesday, November 4 at 7:30pm With the challenges our nation is facing both in political turmoil and with the Covid pandemic, this Evensong will feature music written during difficult times. The introit "Oculi omnium" by Heinrich Schuetz was written in 1625, a time of great suffering when the Thirty Years War was ravaging Europe. The motet "Salve Regina" by French composer Francis Poulenc was written in 1941 in Paris during the brutal Nazi occupation..., and the Magnificat & Nunc dimittis was written by English composer Herbert Howells in March 1945, near the end of World War II. Somehow in the midst of great strife and suffering, composers and artists still worked to create things of beauty to lift the spirit from the troubles of life. These works will be sung by the Cathedral Chamber Choir, a small professional ensemble, as the cathedral seeks to bring live music during a time when it is rare.
