Suburbia Roller Derby 07.01.2021

If the 2020 season has taught us anything ... it's to keep a heart full of thanks. For the rest of November, we would like to participate in the Gratitude Challenge with our friends in the derby-verse. Every day left in November we will share an image of what we are thankful for and challenge another league to do the same! It is our hope that this will inspire you to remember all the great things we still have to be thankful for. Day 3: We are grateful for our family and fri...ends who support us by coming to our bouts and being understanding of all the time we spend practicing and playing: "Not tonight, I have derby." We were nominated by: NH Roller Derby Today we nominate: Albany All Stars Roller Derby #gratitudechallenge #rollerderby #gratitude #happiness #DerbyChallenge #givethanks #goodfriends #staysafe #wewillgetthroughthistogether #togetherbutapart

We lost our friend and former skater Mz. Aftermath just over a year ago. Now her family is raising money for COCOA House, a non-profit mentorship and tutoring program, in her memory:

Just because we can't play roller derby doesn't mean we aren't skating! Our Sandstorm recently finished skating 685 miles in honor of Ledger "Roller Man" Smith's 1963 skate from Chicago to Washington D.C. to see Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Sandy skated 10 to 27 miles at a time between April and August -- all this in between working and helping her community, which was devastated by the coronavirus pandemic. She also raised over $900 for the Ellenville, NY, branch of the NAACP. Suburbia Roller Derby has also made a contribution and we encourage our followers to give anything they can spare.

Today, members of Suburbia will participate in the inaugural World Wide RollOut Day, a Roll to Erase Hate. We at Suburbia stand and skate with the Black Community and all BIPOC against racial injustice and are committed to being an anti-racist and inclusive organization. If you can’t join us locally, there are Rollouts to Erase Hate happening worldwide today! Lace up those skates and show your support!

Suburbia Roller Derby stands with the Black community and all BIPOC against racial injustice and violence. Our mission is to provide a healthy and safe environment, physically and mentally, for individuals who want to learn and play roller derby, and cultivate respect, empowerment, and athleticism in all of our members -- regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. But we can do better. We are listening, and we are actively considering ways to improve both within our league and in our outreach to our surrounding community. We encourage our supporters to educate themselves by following the links below and to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

We have no idea when our next bout will be, but that doesn't mean we can't give out MVP Blocker awards! Suburbia's MVP blockers are our league members who are helping to protect the rest of us from coronavirus: veterinary technicians, grocery store crew members, EMTs, paramedics, police officers, and members of the New York Guard. THANK YOU to our Moonie Sweets, Philbotomy, Apollo Speed, Gore-May Cupcake, Blade E Macbeth, Rollarina Grace, and all of the essential workers out there!

Due to current events and to keep our league and community safe, we are suspending all league activities until further notice. We hope to see you soon!

Our first practice of 2020 last night was bittersweet, but we’re excited to get our skates back on and looking forward to the new season.

Suburbia Roller Derby is heartbroken over the loss of Zee Aria, aka Loraine Acid #59. Acid came to us from Ohio Roller Derby only a year ago, but her impact was immediate and enormous. She blocked and jammed for our all-star team, Suburban Brawl (and won MVP of every bout), joined our coaching and training team, was the captain of our A/B mixed team, and had just started a term as our vice president when she was taken away. Acid personified what roller derby is supposed to b...e about: love for the sport, respect for her opponents, dedication to her team and league, and a drive to keep learning and improving -- even if it was trying to nail down 360 degree apex jumps on the sidelines during practice water breaks (in between rounds of self-imposed squats, of course). She skated with equal parts joy and skill. She set up cross-training sessions, arranged ice skating socials, planned group hikes, and used her dentist skills to make us mouthguards. We will remember Acid as a leader, friend, and teammate who brought talent, intensity, and heart to everything she did. We will never forget her smile. She made us want to be better and she made us better. She was the rising tide that lifted all of us boats. We are so lucky to have had her and we will miss her more than anything. We would also like to thank the derby community for their kind words and support over the last few days. Please consider donating to Acid’s family to help with funeral expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-zee-aria
