Applications are now being accepted for students interested in being 2020-22 Lender Fellows. An information session will be held October 1, and applications are due October 15. The Lender Student Fellowship carries on the vision and commitment of Professor Evan Weissman to advance food justice in Syracuse. Shortly before he passed, Weissman was awarded the Lender Faculty Fellowship; he wanted to examine if the food systems in Syracuse were meeting the needs of the community,... particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In collaboration and consultation with Falk College and local food system representatives, the Lender Center chose Professor Jonnell Robinson to carry on the Faculty Fellowship in Weissman’s name. Five Lender Student Fellows will engage in research, community engagement, dialogue and reflection to inform local efforts to create a more equitable, sustainable and inclusive food system in Central New York. Working in partnership with the Syracuse Onondaga Food Systems Alliance (SOFSA)a newly created food policy counciland Professor Robinson, student fellows will conduct participatory action research to promote community-driven food policies and practices. Students from any discipline are encouraged to apply to serve as a Lender Student Fellow. The Fellowships last for two years and will allow students to engage in collaborative research led by a faculty member.

The 18th annual Syracuse University Human Rights Film Festival (SUHRFF) is online from Sept. 24-26. Thursday, Sept. 24: Coded Bias directed by Shalini Kantayya. Premiering to great acclaim earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film explores the deeply troubling implications of our increasing reliance on artificial intelligence. As MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that most facial-recognition software does not accurately identify darker-skinn...ed faces and the faces of women, she begins investigating the widespread bias in algorithms. Friday, Sept 25: Cecilia Aldarondo’s Landfall, a truly cinematic revelation of the dual crises that have recently beset Puerto Rico: Hurricane Maria and the debt crisis. Saturday, Sept. 26: Yeh Freedom Life, Priya Sen’s exquisitely observed portrait of work class queer lives in Delhi.

Dr. Short was my favorite professor back in the late 1960s. Her classes were exciting, from being rewarded for correct answers with candy, to being greetedoften by namewalking across campus. I was in the famous class that was welcomed in Newhouse’s basement auditorium by the unmistakable sounds, smells, and sight of a motorcycle entering and driving down the aisle by none other than Dr. Short. She sure captured our attention! A few weeks later, my older brother serving in... Vietnam wrote and asked if I knew anything about this ‘crazy’ SU teacher. He’d seen a picture and article about the stunt in the Saigon Times. I was so proud to be her student. She was the ultimate teacher and a role model for my teaching and counseling career. - Meredith Mary Moses Maxwell ’70 , College for Human Development (now Falk College) at Syracuse University Falk College and Syracuse University Libraries have partnered to produce a vibrant audio documentary featuring Professor Emerita Sarah Sally Short, an academic trailblazer in nutrition and proud Orange alumna whose dedicated teaching career at Syracuse University spans more than 50 years. Please consider making a gift to jointly support Falk College and the Libraries by designating 50% of your gift to scholarship funds for nutrition students in honor of Dr. Short, and 50% to the Libraries’ innovation fund to support a range of student success services, collections, online resources, and partnerships. http://ow.ly/2OzP50ARMUg #susallyshortlegacy

"I received the Susan Klenk Scholarship and had the opportunity to be a Teacher’s Assistant for NSD 115: Food Science 1. Knowing all our hard work in rigorous nutrition courses doesn’t go unnoticed is motivational. It made me feel that I had the potential to take on any leadership role at Syracuse University. I feel scholarships are important because they give students recognition for their dedication and future connections in employment." - Georgia Barton ’21, nutrition student Learn how one nutrition professor made a lasting impact on her students during her 50+ years of teaching at Syracuse University, and how you can help give Syracuse students today transformative opportunities and supportive mentors. http://ow.ly/E8eG50AMP8J #SUSallyShortLegacy

Does your professor ride into class on a motorcycle? Well, Professor Sally Short did! Get to know Sally in the new documentary from Syracuse University Libraries and join her in paving the way for students at Syracuse University. http://ow.ly/Iv6q50AFxIs Dr. Sally Short's eccentric teaching sparked student enthusiasm for the sciences and grabbed the attention of The New York Times. In 1975, the paper highlighted her outlandish teaching methods with a photo of Sally barefoot on a motorcycle which she would often ride into class.
