The Difficulty of Trying to Reason with Panic: How to Handle Teens with Anxiety The teenage brain can arguably be called a mess. There are so many factors that are at work inside the mind of a teen. Certainly, there are the responses to the varied experiences of being a teenager in the 21st century. These could be how they interact with other teens (either in person or virtually), school, family dynamics, etc.... There are also the physical and biological aspects of the teenage brain. For instance, we know that it takes about 25 years for the human brain to develop. What this all means is that when teens experience stress, and specifically panic, it can be hard to reason with them. Here’s how to handle those situations. https://suffolkdbtjl.com/the-difficulty-of-trying-to-reaso/

What do you think makes a great DBT therapist? I totally agree that often times my clients don’t like me when they meet me. I also agree that challenging, talking about behavior at great lengths is not always a fun job. The chain analysis is often painful for all parties. However, it’s the complexity of the patterns that will set the stage for freedom of suffering and creating that life worth living. From Rosie- the author of Talking about BPD- Fun fact: I actually kind of h...ated my DBT therapist for a long time! (Ha-ha, maybe that’s why you shouldn’t be allowed to keep your regular therapist because it was definitely me picking a favorite). Honestly, I think I disliked her because she truly challenged my bullshit. She didn’t let me take up all of my therapy sessions talking about what a jerk my boyfriend is because we were here to talk about my behavior and mine alone. Once, I yelled at my DBT therapist until I cried! I’d never yell at my regular therapist in therapy! But you know what it [yelling at my therapist] taught me? I could disagree with someone and the world wouldn’t end. I could yell at someone and we could repair our relationship. I yelled at her, and then she’d do a chain analysis with me about it. She’d calmly walk through my reactions with me and sort out what was going on with my mind and body. And she was the first person I texted when my dad died because I trusted that she could help me in a crisis.

This is awesome thank you , Lindsay Braman for this wonderful work of art. Noticing emotions, describing both in descriptive words and physical sensations/actions. Wonderful to carry around to put words on our experiences. #dbt #dbtskills #emotions
