Leaf Season is here! If possible mulch your leaves in place. Shred leaves with a lawn mower and leave them right on the lawn. It's faster and easier than raki...ng or leaf blowing AND adds nutrients to the soil. Add shredded leaves to your garden and landscaping projects. Shredded leaves can be used as a mulch to help prevent weeds and keep moisture in the soil. The leaves will also slowly release nutrients into the soil. Save your leaves for composting. Fall allows us to collect and store a great carbon rich source for our compost pile and that's leaves! Leaves balance out nitrogen rich materials in your pile like food scraps and grass clippings. Q. I know all-metal cans are fully recyclable in Sullivan County, but what about coffee, nut & snack containers that look like metal on the inside but are reall...y shiny coated paper? A. Great question! Those tricky look-alike "hybrid" or "composite" containers are actually made of two or more dissimilar materials and should be thrown away as garbage. Unfortunately they are not recyclable in most domestic recycling programs. Yuk. Pro tip: Actively purchase goods in all-metal, glass or #1 / #2 rigid plastic containers to ensure recyclability!

This harmless Eastern Milksnake recently sought shelter, food and warmth inside one of our transfer station ticket printers. Our TS staff carefully relocated this reptile to a more suitable outdoor location - without missing a beat!

NYS banned single-use plastic bags on March 1, 2020, but the pandemic delayed enforcement of the measure. A number of Industry groups sued to halt the ban as w...ell, claiming the law was "unconstitutional and inconsistent." Recently State Supreme Court Justice Gerald W. Connolly ruled that the state's ban was, in fact, legal. The Court's decision compels NYS's efforts to end the scourge of singe-use plastic bags, which negatively impact the environment, are difficult to recycle and expensive to clean up as litter. Choose reusable bags instead! See more

Sharps - syringes, lancets and needles - MUST be disposed of properly. THEY ARE NOT RECYCLABLE. They should NOT be thrown away as garbage. According to the NY...S Dept. of Health web site: All hospitals and nursing homes in New York State are mandated by law to accept home-generated sharps as a free community service through their sharps collection programs. In addition, pharmacies, health clinics, community-based organizations, mobile van programs, public transportation facilities, housing projects, police stations, waste transfer stations and other venues have become settings for safe sharps and offer syringe collection drop boxes (or "kiosks") to help facilitate the safe collection of used sharps. "Do you accept Scrap Metal stuff for recycling?" Yes we do! Sullivan County Recycling Stations accept clean, properly sorted (NO garbage, wood, food waste or "...non" metal parts please!) metal items at no charge for recycling. Note air conditioners, refrigerators and appliances that contain refrigerants like CFCs and HCFCs cost $15 each to drop off. Federal and NYS regulations require us to process these units seperately from other metal to prevent release of these gasses to the atmosphere. A vendor is contracted to safely remove, certify and recycle these chemicals to protect our planet's atmosphere.
