Here's a remarkable video by Dr David Martin, showing the motion of the horse's back in walk and trot in slow motion. It shows how important it is to have a supple, balanced seat that can follow the horse's movement.

CENTERED RIDING OFFERS CENTERED RIDING INSTRUCTOR DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP Centered Riding Inc. is pleased to announce that we will offer a Centered Riding Instructor Diversity Scholarship for 2021. The purpose is to increase opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) who are currently under-represented in the horse world, to become Centered Riding Instructors and industry professionals. We believe this will honor the beliefs and wishes of Sally Swift, th...e Founder of Centered Riding, as two of her original Apprentices in Centered Riding were Black women. The scholarship will cover clinic fees for an initial qualifying (2 or 3 day) Open Centered Riding Clinic and for the 7 day Centered Riding Instructor Certification Course, up to a total of $1500.00. In 2021, the CR Instructor Diversity Scholarship will be awarded to a Black, Indigenous or Person of Color riding instructor (in any riding discipline) in the USA. The sponsor for the 2021 Scholarship is Susan E. Harris, Centered Riding Level IV Clinician. We hope to be able to fund this scholarship to continue in future years and to be available in other countries. Applicants must meet the requirements for taking the Centered Instructor Course: i.e., they must be from North America, at least 18 years old, Black, Indigenous or Person of Color, a safe, experienced riding instructor (any discipline), able to ride at walk, trot and canter in a group, and read and accept the terms of the Centered Riding Instructor Course. Preference will be given to candidates who will use their Centered Riding training and qualifications to introduce under-represented BIPOC riders to horses and horsemanship, and/or to help such riders advance in horsemanship and the horse industry. For more information on the scholarship or a scholarship application, please follow this link: https://www.centeredriding.org//Centered-Riding-Offers-Cen Applications must be received by the Centered Riding Office no later than November 1, 2020. The scholarship recipient will be notified during the first week of January, 2021. Anyone wishing to support the Centered Riding Instructor Diversity Scholarship Fund may donate at the Centered Riding website https://www.centeredriding.org/donations/ or contact the Centered Riding Office at [email protected]. Centered Riding is a 501 c-3 Non-Profit organization, and donations are tax deductible in the USA. Please help us by passing this scholarship information on to BIPOC riding instructors you may know, and to any organizations that support them.

A BIT ABOUT SADDLE FIT Susan E. Harris Good saddle fit is essential for both the rider and the horse--especially the horse. It’s the interface between the rider’s seat and the horse’s back and body. ...Continue reading

Dear friends, I've been posting a new lesson every week since March, and I've truly enjoyed doing it. However, now I have to spend more time working on my book. So, sadly, I won't be able to post a new lesson every week. Instead, I'll post a new online lesson at least once a month, and I'll do some shorter blog-style posts every week. Thanks for your wonderful support, and I hope you'll continue to check in and see what's up on this page. I'll try to keep making it worth you...r while to look in here often. If you have questions or would like to discuss something, please feel free to call me at 607-423-2812. Happy reading and riding! Susan Harris

ONLINE LESSON 17 July 10, 2020 STRAIGHTNESS, PART 1: THERE WAS A CROOKED RIDER Susan E. Harris There was a crooked rider who rode a crooked horsehe rode a very crooked dressage test, of course! Sad to say, that could be any of us. Humans are not symmetrical; we’re not made by machines. (If you ever meet someone who’s perfectly symmetrical, it’s an alien!) We all have a dominant eye, hand and leg, usually not all on the same side. Over our lifetime we acquire unconscious...Continue reading
