Syracuse Fire Department 02.11.2020

Tonight, FF Chris Walker works his last shift as a member of the Syracuse Fire Department. On the fireground, Chris was always known as a tough firefighter who would do whatever was necessary to help a citizen in need. Around the firehouse he was a respected senior man, mentor, and friend. Those who have had the opportunity to work with Chris over the past 20 years are fortunate. We wish Chris all the best in retirement!

Today is National First Responders Day. This day is intended to honor the firefighters, police officers, and EMTs who put it all on the line to protect their communities. This morning, we had to say goodbye to one of our own dedicated first responders. A Signal 59 was transmitted for Firefighter Robert Indick, which denotes his official retirement from the Syracuse Fire Department. We’re grateful for Bob’s many years of service to the citizens of Syracuse. We wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement!

District Chief Rick Kisselstein is the Syracuse Fire Department’s Health and Safety Officer. Chief Kisselstein is responsible for addressing all issues affecting the safety, health and wellness of our firefighters. During a pandemic, this job can be very challenging. At an emergency scene, Chief Kisselstein is one of the people tasked with making sure our firefighters are operating as safely as possible.

The Squad Company provides manpower and special equipment at emergency incidents. One very important piece of equipment in their inventory is the AutoPulse, a revolutionary battery-powered cardiopulmonary resuscitation device. Members of Squad-1 deploy this device at all cardiac arrests in the city. Studies have shown that the AutoPulse helps improve the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest. Another example of how the citizens of Syracuse receive some of the best fire and emergency services in the country!

The employees of the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications are the ones who answer your call for help. Without them, we would not be able to do our jobs. Today, we had an opportunity to honor one of them. Chuck Combs, the Syracuse Fire Department liaison at 911, will be retiring at the end of this month. Chuck has been integral in helping the SFD accomplish its mission each day for the past several years. We wish Chuck a long, healthy and happy retirement!
