The Syracuse Police Department recently received information requests about Officers wearing a thin black band over their badges. When an Officer covers their badge with a thin black band, it represents the mourning of the death of a member or former member of police service, and in this most recent case, the passing of former Chief Gary Miguel. Mourning badges are ordered by the Chief of Police and are worn for a specific period of time. They are in no way meant to cover up an Officer's badge number. Any further questions can be directed to the Chief's Office at (315) 442-5250 or by contacting through Facebook. (See the picture below for reference.)

Upon arrival, Officers observed a male who was in the fenced area of a gas station dumpster. The male was observed by Officer to be holding a handgun. Officers... gave several verbal commands to the armed male to drop the gun, but he refused. At one point, the suspect began to fire his weapon at Police Officers on scene. Sergeant Jason Wells and Officer Kenneth Sheehan returned fire, striking the suspect. After the shots were fired, the suspect remained concealed. The suspect was later secured by Officers with the assistance of a police helicopter and robot. The suspect was pronounced dead on scene.
