#UsdanPetTips - As our pets get older, certain daily activities may be a lot more difficult to do. Fortunately, there are assistive devices and home modifications available to help your furry friend navigate more comfortably around the house. In our latest webinar, "Caring for Your Senior Pet," Dr. Carmella Britt, Resident in the Tina Santi Flaherty Rehabilitation and Fitness Service at AMC, discussed some of the physiological changes that occur as our pets age, as well as ho...w nutrition, supplements, exercise, and daily assistance can help meet the needs of our pets as they reach their golden years. #UsdanPetTips - Heavy snowfall is on the way! Before you take your dog out to romp in the snow, it’s important to be prepared. Here are some simple tips that will help make winter walks safer and more enjoyable for you and your dog. Keep Your Dog on a Leash Ice and snow can render a dog’s sense of smell useless, and they can easily lose their way. Make sure that your dog is microchipped and wearing an up-to-date ID tag. Consider Your Dog’s Health and Age Conditions li...ke diabetes or heart disease can affect your dog’s ability to regulate temperature in the cold. The same is true for elderly dogs and young puppies. Play it safe and keep walks short. Bundle Up Don't assume your dog's fur is enough to keep him warm. If it's too cold for you in your coat, it may be too cold for your dog without one. If the air is cold but dry, opt for a cozy sweater. If it’s snowing, a water-resistant coat may be a better choice. Paw Protection Invest in a good pair of waterproof dog booties. Make sure they fit properly and that you give your dog enough time to get used to wearing them. Along with keeping your dog’s feet warm and dry, booties help protect paw pads from irritating rock salt and chemical deicers. For dogs who can't or won't wear booties, paw wax can provide a protective barrier. Avoid Ingestion Emergencies Deicers aren’t just irritating to your dog’s feet; they are also toxic if ingested. When you get home from your walk, clean your dog’s paws, belly, legs and any other areas that may have come in contact with poisonous-to-pets chemicals. Stay Hydrated Bring water and a portable bowl with you on longer walks to keep your dog hydrated. Eating snow is not a good option since it may be contaminated with antifreeze, deicing salts, pesticides, or other toxic chemicals. Watch for Signs If your dog is lifting his paws, shivering, whining, or stopping frequently, cut the walk short and head back indoors. #Pets #Snow #WinterWeather

#UsdanPetTips - Just like us, our pets are vulnerable to developing osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis. It's a degenerative disease of the joints that causes the cartilage to wear down, leading to pain and reduced range of motion. Early signs may be subtle and easy to miss, but if you know what to look for, you might be able to help slow the progression of the disease. If you notice any of the signs listed above, be sure to have your pet seen by your veterinarian. While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, identifying the problem early and starting treatment can help keep pets active and improve their quality of life. #pets #nationalpetwellnessmonth #petwellnessmonth
