Happy #InternationalDanceDay! This year, we celebrate with new traditions. Although our theaters are dark and studios empty, we've found ways to keep this dance community together, even while we're apart. With kitchen stools as ballet barres and living room couches as home theaters, our dance family hasn't let this intermission stop us from creating! #KeepMovingForward

Meet the Artist - Cassandra Trenary! bit.ly/2J89zNz "To push myself to the physical limit of what 'State of Darkness' calls for is something I have never experienced as a performance before. It is rare that one is pushed to be this vulnerable on stage. Molissa's work expresses through movement what words cannot about what this year has felt like for me. I imagine it will resonate with audiences this way as well," says Cassandra Trenary, Principal D...ancer with American Ballet Theatre. She returns to The Joyce stage to perform Molissa Fenley's "State of Darkness," set to Stravinsky's iconic Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) - #LiveFromTheJoyce on Saturday, October 31 at 8pm Eastern Time! Individual tickets start at $12 per household. Live streamed performances will be available for viewing until November 7, 2020. Meet the Artist - Shamel Pitts! "Performing 'State of Darkness' is a very bare and powerful feat. You are there alone (with Stravinsky) at the bottom of the mountain, with all of your life flashing before you as you climb upwards and onwards. It is a test of endurance and of allowing the state to get you towards the light," says Shamel Pitts on performing Molissa Fenley's intense 35-minute solo, "State of Darkness." ... Shamel Pitts is a performance artist, choreographer, conceptual artist, dancer, spoken word artist, and teacher. Born in Brooklyn, Shamel began his dance training at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and The Ailey School before receiving his BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School. Shamel danced with Batsheva Dance Company - for seven years, under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin and is a certified teacher of Gaga movement language. He is the recipient of a 2018 Princess Grace Award in Choreography, a 2019 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Award winner in Choreography, 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, and 2020 Pillow Lab residency at Jacob's Pillow. Shamel is the artistic director/founder of TRIBE, a New York based multidisciplinary arts collective. The most important quality for the dancer is to find themselves completely immersed, Molissa Fenley says about her intense 1988 solo work, "State of Darkness," to The New York Times. It’s about entering into these different states so that at the end of it, there’s been a real gathering of knowledge and intuition and insight."
