For your weekend playlist! Listen to Juilliard alum and Creative Associate Jon Batiste's new single "I Need You," from his soon-to-be released album, We Are. https://youtu.be/AXT00sWwuTQ Batiste spoke to American Songwriter about the album's gensis:... "It’s been a really rich experience and this album is the statement of who I’ve become as an artist and also a statement of my view on who we are as America, with the Black American experience at the center of it because of my cultural lineage and heritage. In general, we are. Who are we? We are. We are the ones who actually are in charge of setting up the next generation and this is a very key time for that. Decisions are being made right now and we are at a point where can undergo a great unlearning or we can undergo the same mistakes that we’ve seen in history." We are so proud that several moments of BOLERO JUILLIARD were included in today's "Celebrating America" program as part of this week's Presidential Inauguration events, in the segment called "Celebrating Americans Who Make Us Smile" just before Juilliard alum Yo-Yo Ma's heartfelt performance. As Yo-Yo reminds us, "We have been tested these last 10 months as individuals, families and communities but in the midst of devastation and loss there were moments when a flickering lig...ht brought us toward a brighter future. You brought us comfort. You sustained us. And so that light grew and became a bright beam in the universe. This is for all of you who found new ways for us to smile together." IN MEMORIAM: Juilliard celebrates the life of longtime dance accompanist Reed Hansen, who died yesterday. The subject of faculty member Terese Capucilli’s 2017 documentary "The Sacrosanct Accompanist," Hansen began his Juilliard career in 1958, providing live music for thousands of Juilliard dance students through the years until his recent retirement. He also accompanied Martha Graham’s school and company classes for decades, and it was she who dubbed his skills sacrosanct. Juilliard joins the dance community in mourning his death. https://www.juilliard.edu//lawrence-reed-hansen-1932-2020-
