Spotlight on CARINA, New Writer for The Junction Journal. My name is Carina Rivera. I'm a Senior and an English Major and Children Studies minor. I have more books than I'll ever read. They make my heart sing and to not collect them would be a disservice to myself. "Maybe this is why we read, and why in moments of darkness we return to books: to find words for what we already know." -Alberto Manguel

Cuomo is announcing budget changes and cuts on June 30th. Don't let CUNY face more budget cuts. We have less than two weeks to make this happen. There is a downloadable version of this post in the link in our bio which you can use to repost and tag @nygovcuomo.

CorCraft is a company that exploits the labor of incarcerated people for $0.16-$1.30 an hour. If CUNY and Brooklyn College care about racial justice they must cut their ties with CorCraft. Brooklyn College Community, please click on this link (works best if you open from phone, we have also provided the email ) to send an automatic email: https://efj.today/1KlZFY7m. Hunter students can go to @twumble for an email template to call out Hunter. We are done with empty statements ...of solidarity. It is time for these institutions to use their power to enact tangible change. Please share and feel free to adapt the email for your own school. [IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE LINK HERE IS THE EMAIL THAT YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE] To: [email protected] CC: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] SUBJECT: End Brooklyn College's Ties to Unjust Prison Labor MESSAGE: My name is [first name, last name] and I am a [current/alum student/grad student/graduate/etc.] at Brooklyn College. A journalist at Stony Brook University recently published an article for The Stony Brook Press about their university’s ties to CorCraft, a company that utilizes poorly paid prison labor. I am emailing you today to deplore Brooklyn College’s parallel ties to CorCraft, and demand that the college and CUNY use their institutional power within New York State to terminate their contracts, call to defund the NYPD, and tell NYS to reinvest in CUNY. President Michelle Anderson recently stated in an email responding to the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery that "at Brooklyn College, we stand against hate--and all forms of white supremacy." Note that she has failed to mention the names of Tony McDade and Layleen Polanco, just some of the many black trans folk murdered at the hands of white supremacy and institutionalized violence. The prison industrial complex and the prison labor used to produce the products purchased from Corcraft are an extension of slavery. They should be condemned as such. Vague statements of solidarity that clutter President Anderson's emails do nothing to change these injustices. Instead of standing under the gaze of performative allyship with such empty statements, I demand that Brooklyn College start using its institutional power to create tangible change to actually "stand against hate." It is not enough to just understand the legacy of racism. We need action and the time is now. Sincerely, [your name]

Being a part of the Brooklyn College community these past four years and serving as club President of Riverrun (aka The Junction) this past year has been such an enriching experience. As I sit at home in quarantine, I realize just how important this community is to me and am so thankful to have these memories to reflect on. One of my favorite memories from this past year has been attending our weekly writing workshop, Writer’s Circle, where I was able to make long-lasting fr...iendships and witness the amazing ways that community and art can intersect. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and continuous support of our members. I want to give a special thanks to our Chief Content Editor, Gina Rivieccio and our Chief Format Editor, Quentin Felton, who tirelessly worked to finalize our magazine despite the obstacles that quarantine posed as well as Samantha Merzel who was the impetus for our special Writer’s Circle events/parties. I would also like to thank all our members who each contributed in different and vital ways to our club this past year. None of this would have been possible without all of you!: Professor Roni Natov, Gina Rivieccio, Quentin Felton, Rose Sugar, Leah Lyuba-Livshits, Nadia Rykova, Jack Coleman, Mary Seeburger, Liz Larsen, Chaya Nachum, Leila Assif, Bren Tawil, Carolina Rosa Martinez, Sean Carey, Samantha Merzel, Bethany Weniger, Matthew Cummins, Mike Raymond, Sophie Shnaidman, and David Yusufov. -Kate McGorry See more
