Therapeutic Inspirations 14.12.2020

I am a yogi. Defined literally as a practitioner of yoga. It is what I do when I am not at work. It is how I exercise. It is how I work on gaining and maintaining my physical strength, flexibility and balance. It is how I decompress. It is how I (attempt) to maintain sanity. Throughout my 18 years of Physical Therapy practice I’ve often borrowed from the physical aspects of my yoga learning to teach and treat my Physical Therapy patients. Some of the poses correlate to funct...ional stretches and therefore aid in the pursuit of flexibility for a marathon runner or someone who suffers from back pain. Some of the poses target specific muscle groups and therefore can aid in strengthening a weekend warrior or even a work-aholic! Some of the poses target functional balance and therefore aid in the stability of a geriatric patient with a recent surgery or fall history. Yoga has become another tool in my bag of tricks to help create a PATIENT-centric treatment plan. Yoga poses can be sprinkled like salt and pepper throughout a customized treatment program for any illness or injury (orthopedic injury, repetitive stress injury, neurologic deficit). Yoga poses can be incorporated as part of any comprehensive and goal-oriented treatment plan. This fits in perfectly with my WHOLE-istic approach to Physical Therapy patient care. I use my manual and hands on skills to observe and correct form. This helps to ensure that the foundation of each pose and exercise is executed properly and safely. I couple traditional hands-on Physical Therapy techniques with skills I have acquired in my own yoga practice to ensure maximal patent experience. In Sanskrit, yoga means "to add", "to join", "to unite", or "to attach", and this is how I relate it Physical Therapy. As described above Yoga has become the perfect union to my traditional therapy practice. I pride myself on running an evidenced-based Physical Therapy practice; Meaning that I want science to support every technique I employ. Yoga techniques incorporated with traditional medicine have amassed extensive support in scientific literature for its health benefits. These include: Pain Reduction, Increased muscle flexibility, Increased muscle strength, Balance, Improved cardiovascular endurance and even Anxiety Reduction. I am currently in a yoga teacher in training at the Professional Yoga Therapy Institute.

Susan is a strong believer in high quality patient centered care. She uses a variety of manual techniques to mobilize and manipulate soft tissue and joint structures to improve tissue extensibility, increase range of motion, and modulate pain and inflammation. Susan's experience with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation also allows her to improve motor performance of soft tissue. In addition to using manual techniques, Susan uses therapeutic exercise and modalities and a... hands-on approach to help her patients achieve their goals. Susan began her journey at Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus where she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Upon graduating she received the Dean's Award for Clinical Excellence. Since graduation she has participated in continuing education courses offered by the Institute of Physical Art and C&M OrthoSports to expand her knowledge relating to manual techniques and to stay current with evidence based practice.
