Did you know that nearly 92% of our profession is white? That’s right. Only 8% of ASHA members are identified as persons of color. As Dr. Valerie Johnson puts it, this creates a culture clash when treating our patients and clients. In order to have more representation of what America looks like in our profession, we have to take a good hard look at our recruitment and admission process. Since I’m more confident and have expanded my knowledge-base, I’ve been able to better serve my patients. I was able to advocate to get a mobile FEES contract in my facility which has drastically improved my ability to treat dysphagia in a science-driven manner and my patients see results much quicker. Who exactly is IN the MedSLP Collective?? - The MedSLP Collective is made up of lots of members. You can find tons of them following and commenting on our IG, as well as in our stories and highlights from time to time.
