"My name is Wendy Angel, M. Ed., CCC/SLP. I’m a Vice President of Rehabilitative services for a large health system. In my leadership position, I serve interdisciplinary teams of rehab service providers for hospitals, skilled nursing centers, home health agencies, and outpatient services throughout the Southeast region of the state of Georgia. Besides a demanding job, I have a family and a personal life that is important to me. I don’t have a lot of time for continuing educa...tion and networking. How do I get it all done? How do I make sure I stay up to date with quality CEUs, networking opportunities, and the latest guidance as it relates to the world of medical speech-language pathology? I have a membership with The Medical SLP Collective." Enrollment is now open! Join here https://medslpcollective.com

There’s a saying that I’ve been living by these last few months. It’s increase competence to increase your confidence. It’s pretty good, right?! That saying has also inspired the theme of this week’s episode of Swallow Your Pride! My special guest, Andrea Hayes, is an acute care SLP supervisor with her BCS-S and M.H.A degree. In episode 154, Andrea discusses the tools and mindset that you need to approach a med SLP career with confidence! Check out Episode 154 and get the show notes here: http://bit.ly/SYPpodcast154

Heated Humidified High Flow Nasal Cannula (HHFNC). To see the patient or not- that is the question. And that is exactly what we’re talking about this week on The Swallow Your Pride Podcast! Candice Devlin and Rory O’Bryan are giving us the down low on all things high flow. Check out Episode 153 and get the show notes here: bit.ly/SYPpodcast153

"I’m Holly Howard, M. Ed., CCC/SLP. I am the owner of Southern Speech Pathology Services, LLC. This private practice has exceeded my initial expectations for success. I spend my days seeing all types of patients and disorders from babies to adults. Many days I am so busy that I skip lunch to fit it all in and work hours longer in the evening to see patients that otherwise would not be seen. I have no one else to rely on but myself. If it gets done, I do it. On top of that,... I have a family and personal responsibilities that I can’t ignore. I don’t have any extra time for figuring out what the best CEUs are to take or for figuring out what are the latest in treatment ideas in the SLP world. I can’t spend extra hours hunting down clinical answers and networking to make sure that my practice runs as effectively as possible. For all of that, I am a member of The Medical SLP Collective." Did you know that nearly 92% of our profession is white? That’s right. Only 8% of ASHA members are identified as persons of color. As Dr. Valerie Johnson puts it, this creates a culture clash when treating our patients and clients. In order to have more representation of what America looks like in our profession, we have to take a good hard look at our recruitment and admission process. In episode 152 of SYP, we hear about the need for a grassroots movement and a more holistic admissions process, and the differences between equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion. I’m grateful to have found such an incredibly supportive group of SLPs in the Collective. As a member, I’ve learned from so many excellent clinicians, and I feel empowered to go above and beyond for my patients. I can’t help but think of the impact this group is making on our patients by enabling and supporting us SLPs to provide high quality, evidence-based treatment. I love contributing to the group, and also learning! -Alexandra Basilakos, Ph.D. CCC-SLP Join the Medical SLP Collective before enrollment ends tonight! medslpcollective.com

Since I’m more confident and have expanded my knowledge-base, I’ve been able to better serve my patients. I was able to advocate to get a mobile FEES contract in my facility which has drastically improved my ability to treat dysphagia in a science-driven manner and my patients see results much quicker. I have the respect of the nurses, doctors, and my DOR because I can explain my clinical decisions in an effective and clear manner which I definitely attribute to the research I’ve been exposed to since joining MedSLP Collective. -Stephanie Schultheisz The Medical SLP Collective closes tomorrow night! Who exactly is IN the MedSLP Collective?? - The MedSLP Collective is made up of lots of members. You can find tons of them following and commenting on our IG, as well as in our stories and highlights from time to time. These are SLPs who are committed to utilizing evidence based practice, doing the absolute best for their patients, and advocating for the advancement of our field. - As you’ve probably heard us say time and time again - once you know better, you DO ...better. That’s basically the motto of the Collective. - So does that mean that if once upon a time, you used cervical auscultation to diagnose dysphagia, lemon ice swabs, and put your patients on pudding thick liquids while making them do cognitive worksheets that you’ll be kicked out of the group? No! We’ll discuss best practices! As long as you’re working on learning and growing as an SLP, this group is for you! - The Collective focuses on building up every member of our SLP community. No goal is too large, and there are no dumb questions. Inside our doors, you’ll find a group of SLPs who are willing to cheer you on, help you problem-solve your toughest patient cases, and who will provide support whenever you need it. All we expect is that when you join, you’re ready to learn and make some changes for the better (for your patients, and for yourself). Join the Collective here medslpcollective.com Enrollment closes tomorrow night!
