I always seek to draw inspiration from life when it comes to making art. As an undeniably life changing 2020 draws to a close, many of us are probably feeling a flood of emotions. A great wave has washed over our planet, leaving no shore or part of life untouched. The Covid effect is tangible and simultaneously invisible and this is especially true for our children. Spark by sunset. So thankful for these last 9 weeks of this Plein Air art program. It showed me what’s possible when we unite against a common challenge. Adapting an after school program around Covid was no easy feat but I was determined to make it work. ... I’m grateful for the families that support a small business like mine and allow me to do what I love. Most importantly, I’m especially thankful to my young artists who adapted along with me to turn any location outside into our studio, you truly are Plein air artists now. Stay hungry and keep creating. #thesparknyc #pleinairart #nycart #makeart #dowhatyoulove

Fall Magic. This week we’re creating Leaf masks ( the more fun masks ) with watercolors. Artists paint over a mounted leaf with any colors or combination of colors. The idea is for them to experiment and play with color. Once dry we peel off the leaf tracing it’s outline and then creating the multi faceted network of veins that deliver water to the leaf. It gets children in front of nature, up close and then mirroring their discoveries with their own colorful painted versions.

Happy Halloween Here’s some amazing watercolor resist work done by all our Spark artists this week. We experimented with oil pastels and crayons to create a resistance layer and then painted watercolor gradients behind in the negative spaces. I hope everyone has a safe and healthy Halloween!

Art in the Park. This concept of teaching outside has allows Spark to pivot our teaching model to serve children again. It’s been such an amazing experience to be outside and see this young artist capture life through creation. Blessed to call this my job. Happy Sunday! . . . #thesparknyc #artinthepark #pleinairart
