Gossip columnist and professional host Elsa Maxwell was the 20th century's premier party planner. She is credited with inventing the scavenger hunt and threw the most glamorous parties for the who’s who of high society and her many celebrity friends. The April in Paris Ball, launched in 1952 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria, was a lavish annual event promoting Franco-American relations while raising funds for charity. The event attracted high society and celebrities who were charmed by Maxwell’s fanciful themes, including a three-ring circus with appearances by some of the top celebrities of the day. #WaldorfTowersNYC

Renowned Broadway composer and songwriter Cole Porter wrote some of his most iconic songs while living in a palatial suite at the legendary Waldorf Astoria hotel for nearly 30 years. Some of his most famous songs, including Night and Day, were written on a 1907 Steinway & Sons piano Porter nicknamed High Society. In the 1970s, Frank Sinatra lived in Porter’s famous suite, and was rumored to pay one million dollars a year for the privilege. #WaldorfTowersNYC

The Waldorf Astoria has a storied history, especially when it comes to world leaders. Every U.S. President from Herbert Hoover to Barack Obama stayed in the hotel; Hoover even lived in the Presidential Suite for three decades, and Dwight D. Eisenhower and Harry S. Truman lived at the Waldorf Astoria for many years after their presidencies. Residents will have a special connection to that legacy, courtesy of The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria’s Presidential Librarya private residential lounge with bar, dedicated to the building’s important role in geopolitical history.

On October 1, 1931, the Waldorf Astoria opened to rapturous praise with over 20,000 in attendance -- twice as many as were invited. President Herbert Hoover said over a broadcast radio address from The White House, The opening of the new Waldorf Astoria is an event in the advancement of hotels, even in New York City it marks the measure of the Nation’s growth in power, in comfort and in artistry an exhibition of courage and confidence to the whole nation The New York T...imes raved, New York’s past and present met yesterday afternoon to welcome back one of the city’s best-known institutions, the Waldorf, noting that 1,000 guests were expected to register by that night. Room rates started at only $6 a night for a single room, ($102 today!) and went up to $38 a night for a suite with a boudoir, which would have been $648 today - a huge sum during the Great Depression. #WaldorfTowersNYC See more

Waldorf Astoria New York, encompassing a full city block on Park Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, was built in only a year. When it opened eighty-nine years ago today, it was the largest, tallest, and grandest hotel in the world, an Art Deco skyscraper dubbed by many to be the unofficial palace of New York. #WaldorfTowersNYC

The day before Black Tuesday in 1929, the Waldorf Astoria secured financing and renowned architects Schultze & Weaver were chosen to design the new hotel on Park Avenue. Daringly launched in the depths of the Great Depression, the Waldorf Astoria pushed onward as a beacon of hope for New York City. Within months in 1931, Art Deco masterpieces including the Waldorf Astoria, the Chrysler Building, and the Empire State Building (which had risen on the site of the former Waldorf-Astoria), opened their doors. #WaldorfTowersNYC

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is responsible for orchestrating the complex restoration of Waldorf Astoria New York. While respecting the original design intent, its team of expert conservationists are preserving this landmark while fully modernizing it for the modern era. SOM’s work at Waldorf Astoria New York ranges from an overarching historical audit of the materials and plans from the original architect Schultze & Weaver, to micro aspects of the restoration, like discovering the original paint colors from the hotel when it opened in 1931.

During the restoration process led by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it was discovered that only one original window had remained from 1931. Nearly all of the windows had been replaced multiple times over the years, with increasingly smaller windows placed into existing frames. But now, every window on the project (nearly 5,400 in total) is being restored to its original design true to the landmarked 1931 exterior including 900 that are increasing in height by a full foot, letting in more light than ever before. Sound attenuation built into every window ensures superior acoustical privacy.
