On October 25, 1921, #WoodlawnConnection Bartholomew "Bat" Masterson passed away in NYC. Masterson was a buffalo hunter, law man, saloon keeper and gambler and was known as friend and colleague of the legendary Wyatt Earp. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Masterson U.S. Marshal for the southern district of New York. He spent his later years working as a feature writer for Human Life Magazine, a sports writer, and eventually the sports editor of the New York Morning Telegraph. #MoreThanACemetery Learn more about our #WoodlawnCemetery notables at www.Woodlawn.org/notable-people/

#italianheritagemonth Fiorello LaGuardia was the 99th Mayor of New York City. He served during the Great Depression and World War II. A man of many firsts, this first generation Italian-American got his start as an interpreter at Ellis Island and later at the State Department. In addition to his monument located in the Oakwood Plot, the memorial for his first wife and child is located in the Lotus Plot at #WoodlawnCemetery and was created by his friend and famed scupltor, Attilio Piccirrili. #MoreThanACemetery Learn more about our notables at www.Woodlawn.org/notable-people/

Q.) I have an idea for a unique memorial. What do I need to know before I proceed? A.) Woodlawn welcomes the development of unique memorials, including a variety of stone. Before you commission a monument maker, please talk to us, as we want to ensure that the monument can be maintained and is compatible with the overall design of the section where your property is located. On this day in history, October 23, 1915, over 25,000 women marched up Fifth Avenue to advocate for women’s suffrage. The women's suffrage movement had been going on for more than 65 years, since the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. This year, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote. Many #WoodlawnCemetery notables fought for women's suffrage including #WoodlawnConnection Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mary Garrett Hay, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont and more. #MoreThanACemetery Learn more about our women's suffrage notables at www.Woodlawn.org/womens-suffrage/

Happy birthday to #WoodlawnConnection Gertrude Ederle! Born on October 23, 1905, Ederle was the first woman to swim the English Channel. Not only did she make headlines all over the world for her tremendous feat, New York City honored her with a ticker-tape parade the first for a woman. In her later years, she taught swimming to children at the Lexington School for the Deaf. #MoreThanACemetery Learn more about our #WoodlawnCemetery notables at www.Woodlawn.org/notable-people/

Happy 95th birthday to the "Queen of Salsa" #WoodlawnConnection Celia Cruz. In past years, we have celebrated her birthday at #WoodlawnCemetery by displaying memorabilia of her life. This year, since we are not able to host this event, please enjoy these photos of past events celebrating her remarkable life.
