Weather Alert The Town of Big Flats DPW have prepare for the weather Thursday and Friday morning. Strong winds along with rain Thursday could lead to localized flooding. Friday morning early, the temperature is to drop below freezing leading to ice roads. We will be monitoring the river and creeks all day Thursday for flooding and the DPW crews are checking trouble areas in the town. Friday DPW will be out salting early to make sure the roads in Big Flats are safe for Holiday... travel. The COVID-19 Testing at the Big Flats Community Center for Thursday December 17/2020 has been cancelled.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: December 11, 2020 RE: Chemung County Free COVID-19 Rapid Tests Big Flats Community Center Contact: Vincent Azzarelli, Chemung County Public Information Director @ 737-2837... Free COVID-19 Rapid Testing for Chemung County Residents December 15th - 17th, 9:30 AM 3:30 PM Pre-registration REQUIRED The Chemung County Health Department will be offering free COVID-19 rapid testing December 15 17 from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the Big Flats Community Center, 476 Maple St, Big Flats. To be tested, you MUST pre-register, wear a mask, and have photo ID. This is not drive-thru testing; you must leave your car and may need to stand for several minutes. To register, click the Free COVID Testing link on the Chemung County webpage, https://www.chemungcountyny.gov/covid_testing/index.php. Once you submit your registration, your time is booked and no further actions are needed. If you want confirmation you must enter an email when you register. You do not need to print or bring this to the testing site. Members attending from the same household will need to register separately. This testing is free and does not require a doctor’s order. Once testing is completed, Health Department staff will discuss the next steps, depending on the test results. Those that are positive will need to quarantine and go straight home. Big Flats Community Center is located at 476 Maple St. in Big Flats. Participants will be directed to parking spots upon arrival to the lot and must remain in their cars with windows up until instructed to enter the building. In an effort to run this clinic as efficiently as possible, please report only at your scheduled appointment time. Anyone with questions regarding scheduling is encouraged to call 607-737-2018 while individuals with COVID questions should call the Chemung County COVID hotline, 607-873-1813. Testing for COVID-19 leads to quick identification of cases and immediate isolation of the person to prevent further spread in our community. Confirmed cases and close contacts to positive cases are quarantined to further reduce spread. Testing is a vital tool for public health to monitor the COVID-19 infection rate as well as to reduce the impact of our current cluster. The testing at this site is free, it does not require a doctor’s order, and results will be available on site. It is possible to have COVID-19 with minimal or even no symptoms at all, that is why it is important that people receive testing. Anyone who cannot make it to this test site is encouraged to visit https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/find-test-site-near-you to find another testing location.

Town of Big Flats with keeping with the NYS guidelines and the resent spike in COVID-19 cases, the Town of Big Flats is not establishing a time in the town for Halloween for trick or treating observance. The Town encourages all to provide a safe and fun experience for your children if you are observing Halloween.

The Town of Big Flats Community Center will be open for Election Day November 3rd from 6AM to 9PM Election Day. Social distancing and facile mask are required.

In Chemung County we have now been designated with the Orange and Yellow Zones . I will up date all as soon as we have confirmation as to where these zones are and what restrictions are being placed on them. As you can see Big Flats in less than three weeks went from 7 cases to over 80. We all need to stay informed and be prudent to the CDC guidelines as the Governor is monitoring these cases. Fines will be imposed by the State if the guidelines are not being observed.

The COVID-19 cases in the Town of Big Flats have gone from 7 for over five months to 66 cases. The County Officials and the Town are working hard to stop the spread of the Covid-19. Please do your part and social distance and the use of facile mask. The Community Center will remain closed until the end of the year. Marg continues to work on virtual programs for the youth.

Please take notice as to the Town of Big Flats Parks pavilions are closed to large gathering. It was reported that a large gathering took place last Sunday without permission from the town. The County Sheriff and the NYS Police have been made aware of this and will be patrolling all parks. If anyone needs more information or has a concern please contact the town supervisor at 562-8443 ext. 204 the parks are open for small family gatherings of 6 or less and all COVID-19 safety protocols are enforced.

The Big Flats Water Department has begun the 2021 budget process. A Public Hearing will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 4:30 pm to discuss the 2021 Proposed Water Rates.

This is the update from Chemung County for 4/25/2020. Today is the opening of Phase 4 for NYS, Harris Hill Amusement will open at noon today. Please support your local business during this pandemic.

Opening of the Community Center During the COVID-19 pandemic the town has had to make several hard decisions, keeping the Community Center closed is one. We have review the state requirements and mandates that the center would have to provide in extra services and cost. Therefore the center will be closed until September 1st unless we see away we can open without excessive cost and mandates and be safe for the public.
