Town Hall History: Mon. Dec 30, 1935 "Let it be said at the outset: Marian Anderson has returned to her native land one of the great singers of our time. " - The New York Times.... Facing adversity in her operatic career because of discrimination against African-Americans, Marian Anderson (1897-1993) made her New York concert hall debut at The Town Hall in 1924. She returned in 1935 to critical acclaim. Ms. Anderson went on to perform on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 (after being denied access to Washington's Constitution Hall), and became the first African-American to perform at New York's Metropolitan Opera.
