The Town of Ogden Highway Department has begun receiving phone calls regarding GYPSY MOTH infestations within various neighborhoods in our town and village. We contacted GARY KOPLUN with the NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION to gather information to pass along to our residents. He explained that they are aware of the infestations and that they are not limited to just our area in Ogden/Spencerport but, that they are all over the county and further. The... following is general information from him. -They are not particularly drawn to any location by anything specific such as plant/tree life. They are light in weight and are literally picked up by the wind and carried and then dropped as the wind subsides. -The caterpillar stage can be slightly toxic in that it affects individuals in different ways and some not at all. A welt or slight rash are common side effects. He further explained that this is why they are so numerous when they find a spot to land. Most birds and other animals won't touch them. -They will cause a tree to de-leaf but won't kill it. -The full cycle from caterpillar, to egg sac, to cocoon, to moth should be over with by mid-July. For any further questions you may have, or for additional information regarding spraying etc. please contact GARY KOPLUN with the NYSDEC at 585.226.5314. He approved us giving out his name and number.

What is the difference between a storm sewer and a sanitary sewer? Storm sewers discharge untreated stormwater to a waterway. Sanitary sewers go to a treatment plan and get treated.

Here at the Town of Ogden Highway Department safety is a priority. It is imperative that drivers take extra caution during the winter driving season. Below are some considerations to take to ensure safer travel. Have a safe winter! SLOW DOWN - Posted speed limit signs are for dry roads so you may have to drive slower than the posted speed for the current roadway conditions. GIVE THEM ROOM - Don’t crowd other vehicles. It takes more time to stop when roads are wet.... BE PATIENT- Show consideration for other drivers and allow for extra driving time. WATCH FOR ICY SURFACES - Bridges and overpasses are the first to freeze! Shaded areas are possible black ice. MAKE YOURSELF MORE VISIBLE - Drive with your headlights on. KNOW THE ROAD - Be aware of road conditions and closed roadways before you travel. PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE Clear your vehicle, including lights and windows, of snow and ice before traveling and keep up on routine vehicle maintenance. Carry emergency supplies. (jumper cables, flashlight, batteries, blanket, snow shovel, first aide kit, candle & matches) GIVE THEM ROOM - Don’t crowd the plow truck. Stay far behind them as visibility is reduced inside the truck and it takes more time to stop when roads are snow covered and wet. Do your best to keep as far right as safely possible to allow the plow to clear the thicker buildup on the centerline. DON’T RUSH- Pulling out in front of a plow truck to get ahead may cause the driver to unnecessarily apply the brakes. Trucks weigh several tons when loaded with salt. BE AWARE - A plow truck at an intersection may first have to turn right to empty the plow. Anticipating the driver’s need to do this by keeping back may avoid an accident. PARKING - There should never be vehicles parked in the roadway, on the shoulders or within the road right-of way at anytime during the winter months. Roadways need to be clear for plows and it is difficult to have to maneuver them around parked vehicles in their pathway especially at night. DIG IT OUT- Buried mailboxes are impossible to see. It is hard enough for the driver and the wingman to maintain proper distance regarding the wing blade and your mail box when it is not snow covered. BE UNDERSTANDING - There will be times when your mailbox is accidentally hit. The force of flying snow alone can displace an already weakened box mount or post. If yours is accidentally taken down by a town plow truck the highway department will replace it with a standard 4’x4’ wooden post and a standard galvanized steel box at no charge. By law, they are not required to replace them. It is done as a courtesy. A suggestion: if you have a custom box or post, take them down for the winter months. Make sure the face of your mailbox is at least 16ft. from the center of the roadway and it should be 42 high from the ground to the bottom of the board the box sits on.

The Town of Ogden Highway crew will be "sweeping" the town periodically beginning today December 31 throughout the holiday weekend to pick up any Christmas trees. Place them out by the road but not in the road if you would like yours picked up. If we happen to miss it you can call the highway office Monday, January 4th at 617.6160 to let us know your location. As a reminder, you can also drop them off at our facility. Have a safe New Years Eve and day. We wish a healthy 2021 for all of our Ogden residents.

Some of us like to keep them up for a while and some of us like to take them down and get rid of them the day after so, since some of our Ogden residents are already asking, here is the information regarding Christmas tree disposal. If you live outside of the village in Ogden there are 2 options to recycle your real Christmas tree. 1. Drop it off at our highway facility at 2432 S. Union St. just outside of the gate in the concrete bin. 2. Place it out in the same spot you would place your brush for pickup and give our office a call (617.6160) to let us know it is out there. Please remember, we are plowing and salting so don't place it to close to the roadway where the wing could catch it and, wait for a day when the wind is not to strong where it could blow it out into traffic or elsewhere. Thank you.
