Millbrook School's Trevor Zoo 02.07.2021

If a tree falls at the zoo, and no one is around to hear it, does is make a sound? The answer is YES! Yesterday morning at exactly 9:32 AM a large locust tree along the banks of our pond came crashing down and missed the Jono and Jane Education Center by mere inches! Fortunately no animals or people were injured. We did lose a gutter, some shingles, a crane feeder and a sign.... The scene was capture by a number of cameras around the zoo, as you can see here. Our AXIS pond camera took a good hit, but after a reboot it seems to be working just fine! Thank you AXIS for making such a durable product! @axiscommunications #whenatreefalls

Our Zooie of the Week, and final one for the 20-21 school year, is Eli Crystal ‘23, a 4th former from New York City. Before coming to Millbrook, Eli attended the Dalton School. The Zoo is definitely more hands-on experience than some of the other community services. I hadn’t really done anything like this before, coming from the city. Getting to interact with the animals and seeing what goes on at the zoo is pretty interesting and it wasn’t really what I was expecting. I fin...d the red pandas and the red wolves to be some of the more fascinating and of course endangered animals that we have here at the zoo. I’d tell future Zooies to look forward to seeing all the different animals and enjoy the experience of working at the zoo. I came to Millbrook because I wanted to leave the city and play more competitive sports than I could there. I play football and lacrosse, and sports here are much more serious than at my previous school. My favorite classes this year were history with Mr. Powers and English with Ms. Havard. Congratulations Eli! Enjoy your summer vacation and we look forward to seeing you at the zoo next fall! #zooieoftheweel #communityservice

As Covid-19 case numbers decrease we are happy to announce that some of our pandemic protocols have been reduced. As of today, visitors no longer need to wear masks outside while visiting the zoo. We do ask that you continue to wear your mask while inside any of our buildings. This is for the safety of our animals and those not yet vaccinated. Also, we are discontinuing temperature checks and the one-way path protocol. As things begin to return to normal, we want to thank all... our members and visitors to the zoo who have come to see us since we reopened last July. Without your support we would not have been able stay open to the public and continue our important work of wildlife conservation. Our reservation system remains in place, so we ask if you do plan to come to the zoo, please make a reservation on our website at www.trevorzoo.org. Come see the baby lemurs. They are growing fast! #lemurs #cuteanimals #babyanimals #grateful #thanks

Today the tectonic Class of 2021 celebrated their graduation from Millbrook during the school’s 90th Commencement exercises. As we applauded their accomplishments we appreciated the special circumstances of this school year and the almost unimaginable efforts which were achieved by the entire Millbrook community to make a full year of in-person school possible. As Millbrook Board Head Bill Menard ‘78 said in his welcoming remarks, the Class of 2021 had perhaps The most au...thentic Millbrook experience of any class. We particularly acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of our Student Head Curators Justin DeFour, Amber Hatfield, and Peter Lyon. As they move forward in their lives and education (to Cornell, University of Miami, and Dennison) we look back on the past four years and thank them for leaving Millbrook, the Trevor Zoo, and the planet better than they found it. #nonsibisedcuntis #zooiesforever #communityservice

Our Zooie of the Week is Camryn Woodin, a 3rd Former from the Class of 2024! Camryn hails from Kent, Connecticut, and attended Washington Montessori School before coming to Millbrook. She’s been a summer volunteer at the Trevor Zoo and first visited the zoo before she could even walk. After applying to seven different high schools, Camryn chose Millbrook in large part because of the Trevor Zoo, but also because of the nice community feeling compared to most other schools. ...Cam likes the ferrets the most, but is also a fan of our reptiles including the snakes. She’s also a member of our afternoon Zoo Squad which she enjoys even more than the Community Service blocks because she gets to spend longer amounts of time at the zoo, and more time with the animals. Her advice to other new zooies - Enjoy what you are learning and take that with you throughout your years. Enjoy your experience. Eventually, I want to have my own sustainable farm, make my own food and raise my own animals. I’d also like to have an animal sanctuary with some exotics. Sounds like Camryn picked the right school! Keep up the great work! #zooies #communityservice #zooieoftheweek
