Fraudulent Roofing Contractors There have been some recent reports of fraudulent roofing contractor scams in our area. Homeowners should be cautioned that if someone knocks on their door and offers to inspect their roof for free they may be a reputable roofing contractor, but Roofing scammers attempt to exaggerate or fabricate damage and tell the homeowner that their insurance company will pay for the repairs.... A common method used by these roofing scammers is to offer free roof inspections to homeowners. The scammers will say that they just happened to be working in the neighborhood and noticed some damage and will offer to go up on the roof and inspect it for free. If the homeowner permits them to inspect the roof, the scammer will advise the homeowner that the roof has substantial damage that needs to be repaired right away. The scammer will try to convince the homeowner to hire them to do the repairs indicating that they can give them a great price because they are just finishing another job in their neighborhood. The best advice you can share with your homeowner customers is that they should not let anyone go up on their roof without doing their homework. Below is a list of some information a homeowner should obtain from a roofing contractor before allowing them to inspect their roof or perform any repairs. Obtain details for their permanent place of business such as telephone number, physical location, business license, etc. Obtain Certificate of Insurance Request client references and a list of completed projects. Insist on a written proposal that contains complete description of the work and specifications, including approximate start and completion dates and payment procedures.
