A message from Jimmy on an important film: DRIVING WHILE BLACK: RACE, SPACE AND MOBILITY IN AMERICA is a documentary film that helps us, Discover how the advent of the automobile brought new mobility and freedom for African Americans but also exposed them to discrimination and deadly violence, and how that history resonates today (pbs.org). Black members of our congregation and their families have stories to tell about how their skin color led to encounters with law enfor...cement, as well as with owners of hotels and restaurants. Some remember using the Green Book. While today much has changed, people with white skin, me included, have little firsthand knowledge about the risks today for those who are pulled over for driving while black. Perhaps this film will move that conversation forward. CHANNEL 13, WNET Oct. 13, 9 PM Oct. 15, 2 AM CHANNEL 21, WLIW Oct. 17, 8 PM Oct. 18, 12 AM Driving While Black: Race, Space and Mobility in America - a ground-breaking, two-hour documentary film by acclaimed historian Dr. Gretchen Sorin and Emmy-winning director Ric Burns - will air on PBS on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, at 9pm. The film examines the history of African Americans on the road from the early 1900’s through the 1960’s and beyond. The film explores deeply embedded dynamics of race, space and mobility in America - focusing in particular on the historical background, unfolding reality, and contemporary relevance of the experience of African Americans navigating the nation’s highways during the last four decades of Jim Crow - one of the most crucial, turbulent and transformative periods in American racial, cultural, social and political history. With urgent and powerful reverberations in American society today, this riveting history - at once revelatory, deeply troubling, and inspiring for what it reveals about human courage, creativity, and commitment to change - provides a crucial window on issues of class, gender, law enforcement, discrimination, automobile culture and national identity (https://www.pbs.org/show/driving-while-black/).

There is no doubt that a great deal of work needs to be done to repair our broken world. When it feels overwhelming, just stop. Stop and remember this truth. LOVE is the most necessary work. Love the one in front of you. Whether that is the person in your living room or the person across your street. Stay present. Stay in tune with what’s most important in the moment. Love. Go today and be kind. Be loving. Be a presence of peace. Peace be with you church.

Peace is a scarcity it seems for so many of us. When I feel this lack, I often turn to Jesus' words all throughout the New Testament. He speaks often of peace. May we hold these words close today as we seek for peace within our souls and within our world. Peace be with you church.

Richard Rohr explains it well. We need more enchantment and revelation in these moments. How will we experience contemplation today? Slow down and take notice. Peace be with you.
