U.S. House Subcommittee Congressional investigators reported last week, that due to lax federal government oversight, ingredients in some baby foods including organic-- are contaminated with much higher levels of lead, cadmium and arsenic than levels permitted in water. Exposure to heavy metals in infants and toddlers is related to behavior issues, cognitive problems, and even death in extreme cases. Exposures from different sources can be cumulative. Investigators advised ...that parents not give infants rice or products made with rice. Data for the report was collected from 4 manufacturers. Some companies refused to provide data which concerned investigators. The investigators reported that the issue is not new and called on the FDA to set standards that better regulate heavy metals in baby food to protect vulnerable infants from neurological damage and increased risk for developing some cancers later in life. The time is now for FDA to determine whether there is any safe exposure level for babies to inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, to require manufacturers to meet those levels, and to inform consumers through labels. Parents can urges manufacturers to make this change voluntarily. https://oversight.house.gov//2021-02-04%20ECP%20Baby%20Foo See more
