All UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive sails made for cruising and performance cruising are made with laminates that have one side covered with a lightweight taffeta for extra durability. To save weight, racing sails do not have the full taffeta layer. The loadpath low-stretch fibers are bonded to the mylar side of the laminate. We can add protection to those yarns just in high damage areas to put protection where it is needed. The leech of all sails benefits from having extra taffeta pr...otection because when a sail luffs, the leech is the area most exposed to flogging, abrasion, and potential damage. CHECKING OUT SANTA'S VIEW Merry Chistmas from the top of Soulmates' mast (75ft or 23m up). I went up this morning to bring down my wind instruments, which I forgot to do after our last sail 26 days ago. Going up the rig when a boat is on land is not recommended and I would not have gone up if the boat was on jack-stands, but Soulmates is well-supported in a custom cradle. Once again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. To borrow a line from the CBS Television news anchor Norah O'Donnell, "Stay positive and test negative." Most spinnakers fall into five mold shapes to suit different wind speeds and wind angles. In the 1-5 numbering system; the even numbers designate running shapes and the odd numbers are reaching sails. Lower numbers designate lighter wind sails and higher numbers are for higher wind speeds. Code Zeros were invented after the original numbering system and they are very flat spinnakers for light air close reaching; they are a must on boats with non-overlapping genoas. Talk to yo...ur local UK Sailmaker about building a spinnaker inventory for your racing needs. Here is a video showing an A3 made out of Code Zero material on the Sydney 43 Christopher Dragon before the 2017 Sydney Hobart Race. Season's Greetings, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Here is hoping the 2021 will be much better for all. Even with all the missed sailing events and sickness in 2020, there were plenty of bright memories, let’s keep thinking about them as we go forward. It's (always) a beautiful day in the neighborhood...if you own a boat. https://www.youtube.com/watch Here's a video of Californian Sailor Chris Williams visiting the "neighborhood" of his boat. On a calm, sunny day, Chris brings us along on his "maintenance and required" voyage as he fusses with that, twiddles with that, replaces the other thing, and generally messes around with his boat. What a great way to spend nine-and-one-half minutes on a wintery day. BTW, Chris wrote the 1981 biography of Ted Turner "Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way." He also wrote for the Washington Post and the TV show "Hill Street Blues." Now he is retired in SoCal, and writes about sailing. Enjoy this and maybe send us a video of you visiting your "neighborhood."

This video shows a Swiss X-35 being single handled out for a late season sail and going fast! Notice that the boat's X-Drive Carbon main is holding a smooth, flat shape while reefed. The wavy black taffeta strip up the leech of the main is to prevent "hinging" damage from the leech tape fluttering when the sail luffs during sets and douses. To help protect today’s sails and extend their peak performance lives, UK Sailmakers builds all our X-Drive cruising sails where one side of the sail is fully covered by a lightweight finely-woven polyester taffeta or Dimension Polyant Sailcloth’s Liteskin. These coverings are on the side of the sail opposite to the load path yarns. Not only does taffeta or LiteSkin layer protect the laminate from abrasion, but it also adds UV protection, prevents cracking of the film and red...uces creasing. While neither LiteSkin nor taffeta adds strength, both add longevity. UK Sailmakers also offers the option of adding taffeta or LiteSkin over the entire second side of the sail or just over the loadpath fibers in high chafe and stress areas. Targeted protection saves weight and cost. The upper photo shows an X-Yachts 4.0 with X-Drive carbon sails. The port side of the sails are covered entirely by LiteSkin. The lower picture shows the same boat from the starboard side where you can clearly see how both the main and the jib have additional grey taffeta providing a protective layer on its leech and foot, as well as a black UV cover on the leech and foot. The mainsail has a taffeta strip on the leech. The leeches of all sails are the most highly loaded areas and they get the most abuse from flogging. Lite Skin is a thin, lightweight sheet of random, non-woven, polyester filaments that gives the sail a matte-black appearance. LiteSkin is a proprietary product of Dimension-Polyant Sailcloth and it comes in two weights: 10x10 and a lighter 5x5, which is half the weight of the 10x10 style. LiteSkin has shown it blocks UV rays well. Taffeta is a lightweight, finely woven polyester cloth. Taffeta has more chafe resistance than Like LiteSkin, but it is twice the weight of LiteSkin 10x10. Recently, I took a day and a half to sail my boat SOULMATES singlehanded from Newport, Rhode Island, back to my home club in New Rochelle, New York. I made the 120-mile trip singlehanded by choice as it was the first time I sailed my custom 40-footer by myself. Because of the need to social distance, this year I raced mostly doublehanded, after having raced for the last eight years with a crew of 11. Attempting to sail singlehanded was a natural progression in simplifying my ...Continue reading

Yesterday’s post introduced Ocean Youth Sailing whose goal is to teach kids and young adults about the environment and ocean sailing on their 45-foot catamaran. Their two-hulled floating classroom/dormitory was built by students who learned the arts of composite boat building. Here is a video of them sailing. On July 22nd, OYS posted on their Facebook page: We are huge fans of our Code Zero Sail! In 9.5 knots true wind speed we are sailing with 8.2 knots boat speed while sim...ultaneously recuperating energy with our E-Motors. X-Drive Sails Power Ocean Youth Sailing’s Catamaran Classroom Ocean Youth Sailing (OYS) is a non-profit, community sailing organization founded in Switzerland. Their program is run on a 45-foot catamaran that the students built and now use as a sailing classroom. Started in 2014 with 30 youth sailors, the group now has over 300 teenagers and young adults involved. This community project for young adults brings together education about the environment and the ocean along with... offshore sailing education. UK Sailmakers X-Drive sails met their performance and durability needs. We are happy to be their sailmaker. We wanted our youth to acquire a strong sense of responsibility and teamwork as well as gain hands-on ocean sailing experience. To accomplish that, we started building our catamaran from scratch, said Lukas Ruppen, Head of Construction and Operation. It took three years, from 2016-2019 to build the Schionning Arrow 1360 (a 45-foot catamaran) in Switzerland. More than 150 teenagers and young adults dedicated a total of approximately 6,500 hours of volunteer work. While doing so, they were being guided by expert boat builders who were also association members. In 2020, the boat was transported to the Netherlands to start its first season. For the sails, OYS worked with UK Sailmakers and local Lake Geneva Sailmaker Max Gigli from XM-Marine. The Schionning catamaran is a high-performance boat that will be sailed by many different young sailors with a variety of experience levels. To be able to sail with high-performance, durable and affordable sails, OYS chose UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive sails. These sails are robust so they will give us seasons of excellent performance, and they are also very fast, said OYS’s Nicola Möckli. After more 2000 miles of sailing, we are very, very happy with how our X-Drive sails are still performing so well and how they are holding up. The new sails are living up to all our expectations. The first photo was taken by Fiona and the rest by Nicola. With the high cost of new boats, many boat owners are looking to update the boats they have and know well, or low priced classics. Here is an example of Irish sailors Mel and Kieran Collins describing how they transformed their vintage Olson 30 CORACLE IV into an 'IRC weapon.' Carbon fiber is the highest performance yarn used in sailmaking. Carbon fiber’s resistance to stretch is three times greater that S-Glass yarns, which are three times more stretch resistant than polyester yarns. The almost complete coverage of continuous load path carbon yarns on the sail leads to a smooth flying shape. UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive sails are the preferred choice for sailors who are looking for the performance of continuous yarn sails yet also want sails that are d...urable and affordable. Because they deliver on all three points, X-Drive sails have proven to be the ideal choice for racers, club racers and performance cruisers. Shown here is a Halberg Rassy 53 with X-Drive Endure sails. These all white sails are made with Endumax fibers. Endumax is an Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, similar to Spectra and Dyneema fibers known for high strength and durability. While being stretchier than carbon, Endumax fibers stand up to abuse much better. X-Drive Endure sails give racing performance with the durability cruising sailors require -- all with a clean classic white appearance. Because th...ese sails are made with Endumax and because they have the endurance that is required for successful cruising and shorthanded sailing, we named the new line of sails, X-Drive Endure. STUDY SHOWS THE DIFFERENCES IN DACRONS It’s one of life’s truisms. You think you’re doing yourself a favor buying based on a low price...and you end-up disappointed when what you receive is low quality. This is particularly true with Dacron sails. Many cruising sailors opt for traditional Dacron sails over more expensive laminate sails because they like the all-white appearance of the sails and the cost savings. It’s when one starts reviewing their options with Dacron sails ...Continue reading

Fall sailing can offer the best conditions of the year. The skies are clear, the wind blows stronger and the water is still warm. Here we are jib reaching on my 40-footer SOULMATES during our doublehanded, 120-mile delivery from New York to Newport, RI. We are reaching with the No. 4 Genoa, which is X-Drive carbon on a Spectra/Taffeta laminate. The sail is bullet proof.
