Ukrainian Museum 31.10.2020

Artist MYKOLA SAMOKYSH (born October 25, 1860; died January 18, 1944). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" Ukrainian painter and graphic artist born in Nizhyn, Ukraine; died in Simferopol, Crimea. Studied art at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (18791885), where was part of a group of Ukrainian painters, Serhii Vasylkivsky, Porfyrii Martynovych, and Opanas Slastion, who were dedicated to depicting the history and ways of li...fe of the Ukrainian people. Also studied in Paris (18861889). Early on he established himself as a battle painter and headed the battle-painting studio at the St. Petersburg Academy. Often visited Ukraine and took part in exhibitions there. Provided numerous book illustrations. In 1921 moved to Simferopol in Crimea. Also taught at the Kharkiv Art Institute (19371941). His artworks are in museum collections in Russia and Ukraine, as well as in private collections. Artist SIMON LISSIM (born October 24, 1900; died May 10, 1981). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" Ukrainian American painter, ceramics artist, stage designer and teacher born in Kyiv, Ukraine; died in Naples, Florida. Studied at the Kyiv Art School and at the age of 17 began working as an assistant stage designer in the Kyiv Repertory Theater, at the time when Alexandra Exter and Isaak Rabinovich were working there as well. ...Left Ukraine for Germany in 1919 and later to France. His first job in Paris was as stage designer for the Theatre de L'Oeuvre. His first one-man show was in Paris in 1923. Immigrated to the US in 1941 and had his first solo exhibition in New York at the Wildenstein Gallery. Taught stage design courses at City College from 1944 to 1971 until retirement. A designer of fine porcelain, Lissim fulfilled over 100 contracts with Lenox and Royal Copenhagen among others. His work is in the collection of 70 museums in the US and Europe, including the Metropolitan, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Jeu de Paume in Paris, and many others. Artist MYROSLAV RADYSH (born October 21, 1910; died June 7, 1956). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" Ukrainian painter and scenery designer born in the village of Illintsi, Sniatyn county, Galicia (Western Ukraine); died in New York City. A graduate of Poznan Art School (1938) and the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, he was a chief designer at the Lviv Opera Theater since 1940. A postwar émigré in Germany, worked as a pa...inter and decorator for the Volodymyr Blavatsky Theater. Immigrated to the United States in 1950, settling in New York City where he collaborated with the Theater-Studio of Josyp Hirniak. Participated in many group exhibitions in Lviv, Munich and many cities in the US. Also had solo shows in New York (1952, 1953) and Philadelphia (1954). Painted portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. His impressionist style evolved toward ever-greater emphasis on color. A book about him was published posthumously in 1966. Artist, writer, professor, ALEXANDER MOTYL (born October 21, 1953). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" American painter, writer, professor of political science of Ukrainian descent born in New York City. Studied painting with Leon Goldin at Columbia University. Participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including in New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, Charlotte, North Carolina, Malvern, Pennsylvania, and many others. C...ityscapes, still lifes, and figures are the most represented subjects in Motyl's work. Alexander Motyl (pictured) is Professor of Political Science at Rutgers-Newark. The Ukrainian Museum has collaborated with Professor Motyl on many film screenings, book presentations, as well as exhibitions. He was a guest co-curator of The Ukrainian Museum's 2018 exhibition "Andy Warhol: Endangered Species" (http://www.ukrainianmuseum.org/ex_181006warhol.html). He presented his novel "Who Killed Andrei Warhol" (2007, 2018) in conjunction with the Warhol exhibition, along with Andy Warhol's nephew, James Warhola (pictured), artist, writer and book illustrator for major publishing houses. Artist SERHII VASYLKIVSKY (born October 19, 1854; died October 7, 1917). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" Serhii Vasylkivsky (born October 19, 1854; died October 7, 1917) Ukrainian artist of the pre-revolutionary period and an expert on Ukrainian ornamentation and folk art born in Izium, Kharkiv Oblast; died in Kharkiv, Ukraine. His first art lessons were given by Dmytro Bezperchy, a student of Karl Briullov. Studied at th...e Kharkiv Veterinary Academy but left it in 1873. Enrolled at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1876. Upon graduation in 1885 he traveled to Europe and North Africa on a scholarship from the Academy, painting places he visited. During his stay in Paris was influenced by the Barbizon School. After settling in Kharkiv in 1888, he became active in Ukrainian artistic circles and headed the architectural and art society there. Left behind almost 3,000 works of realist and impressionist art, sketches, and drawings, many of which were lost during WWII. Completed a number of works on historical and ethnographic themes. Studied painting, sculpture, and architecture in Chernivtsi and in the Academy of Arts in Bucharest. Resided in Paris starting in 1950. Had a number of solo and group shows in Paris, as well as in galleries, museums, founda...tions, and universities in other European countries, including Ukraine, and the US, Canada, and Japan. Author of abstract paintings in bright colors. In 1983 opened his own studio near Parc Montsouris in Paris' Rive Gauche (the Left Bank). Received a number of awards, including the silver medal from the Society of Art, Sciences and Literature (Paris, 1968). Graduated from the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (1953), studying with Roman Selsky. A prolific artist and one of the important figures of the Lviv School of Art, he worked in many mediums mosaics, m...urals, oils, pastels and graphics. His early works are characterized by contrasting colors; later on, he experimented with pure color. Since 1958 member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine. Laureate of the Shevchenko Prize for the series of works "Shevchenko's Land" (1999), recipient of the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (2009). Studied at the Leningrad Academy of Arts, Odesa Art School and Kyiv Art Institute from which he graduated in 1941. During World War II worked as a set designer. Immigrated to the US v...ia a DP camp in Germany in 1950. Settled in Minneapolis where he worked for architectural firms as a draftsman. Known for his portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Exhibited in Ukraine before the war, later in the Western European cities of Munich, Regensburg, Paris, Amsterdam, and in North America in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, St. Paul and Minneapolis among others. Sculptor SERHII LYTVYNENKO (born October 5, 1899; died June 20, 1964). From the series "Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum's Fine Art Collection" Ukrainian sculptor born in the town of Pyriatyn in the Poltava region, Ukraine; died in New York City. Participated in the fight for Ukrainian liberation (19191920) and was forced to emigrate in 1921. Studied art at the Kraków Academy of Arts (19241929) and after graduation, in 1930, went to Paris to continue his educat...ion. After return settled in Lviv where he had his own ceramics studio. Immigrated to the United States in 1949 via a DP camp in Germany. Initiator and head of the Ukrainian Art and Literary Club in New York (19491959), as well as head of the Association of Ukrainian Artists in America (19521957). Was influenced by Rodin and impressionism. Well-known as portraitist and author of a number of monuments. Also worked on iconostases for various churches, including St. Michael's Cathedral in Chicago and St. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral in Winnipeg.
