Ever wonder what the IRS does with property they seize to cover individual tax debt? They sell it of course -- they're only interested in the cash needed to pay off tax bills. And that can mean good deals for anyone looking to buy. Check it out!

Did you know that your tax returns can be reviewed, even if someone prepared them besides us? We can often find mistakes made by software, or other preparers -- and amend your return for a more favorable outcome. Did you leave money on the table?

Just because your accountant somehow qualified you for the Section 199A deduction, it doesn't mean that he/she covered all your tax bases. If you want to be sure your business had made the most of all of the tax law changes, schedule a postseason tax return review and tax planning session with us. We'll put a second set of eyes of your business return to make sure that everything possible was covered properly. Just give us a call to get that scheduled.

Pssst! Mother's Day is on Sunday! There are actually some pretty good gift ideas in this article. We like this guiding principle to keep in mind as you plan: "What's something Mom really likes to do but never gets to because she's too busy taking care of everyone else?"

Schedule some tax spring cleaning this month, and you will thank yourself (and us) later.

If you want a bigger refund next year, update your paycheck withholdings now. While you're likely paying less in taxes overall, the government is also taking less out of each paycheck.

According to recent data, only 34% of family businesses successfully pass to the second generation, and only 13% make it to the third generation. Those aren't great numbers, considering that many family business owners try to pass down their businesses to their children. If this is your desire as a business owner, you need a succession plan. To do it right, you need to make sure you are training family business leadership well, that business decisions are made for business reasons only, and that ownership transfers are made according to a good plan.

Tax planning is for those who want to get ahead of the game, and not simply "play defense" during the tax filing season. We take a look at what your projected return would be, and we give you things to do before year-end to abide by the code ... to your advantage. Contact us if you're interested in playing offense this year.

Even avid budgeters need a refresher every now and then. There are some really practical and doable tips here.

Can we get some Amens, LOLs, or Likes on this one? Come on, we know you agree. (Now for the record, using a professional like us to help you with your taxes eliminates the "guessing" portion of the equation, but nevertheless, this did make us chuckle.)

"Your present circumstances don't determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start." - Nido Qubein There have been so many great influencers out there who had less-than-shiny beginnings. Today is the best day to start anew -- toward your financial goals and your life dreams.

If you still haven't received your tax refund, don't worry! If the IRS doesn't issue your refund within 45 days of the filing deadline, they're required to begin paying interest on it.

The close of this week marks the end of our busiest time of the year. We do love our work, but it has still been a long ... er, four months, that felt a little bit like this... (Can anyone else relate? Anyone else ready for a looong weekend? )

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 21.06.2020

Extension-filers: Remember, an "Extension of Time to File" is not an "Extension of Time to Pay", unfortunately. The extension simply gives you an automatic six months of additional time to get your paperwork together and file that return. But, if you owe more than what you paid with your estimate, you'll be accumulating penalties and interest on the difference -- so don't take the entire six months to do this!

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 13.06.2020

Maine and Massachusetts: Today is your day. Consider this your FINAL REMINDER to get your paperwork in or extension filed.

You (we) made it to Tax Day. Whew! Make sure and grab up some of these freebies and discounts that are valid today. As for us, we're still busy at it. (And now accepting encouraging words, happy thoughts, hot coffee, yummy treats, and high fives.)

We all need a good laugh (especially our office at this time of year!) so give us a shout-out in the comments if you agree with this one and will be avoiding jail this year. "We'll try to cooperate fully with the IRS, because, as citizens, we feel a strong patriotic duty not to go to jail." - Dave Barry

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 15.04.2020

Do you have "audit fear"? Our goal is to prevent that. How? We help you year-round so that come tax time, you can rest confidently knowing a pro has your back. Doesn't that sound better than fearing the process? If you think so, then give us a call so we can help.

If you cannot pay your taxes due for some reason: 1) Pay as much as you possibly can right now. 2) You can ask for (and often receive) an extension of up to 120 days to PAY. (It requires a phone call to the IRS.)... 3) "Financial hardship" delay: this is if paying your tax bill would demonstrably affect your ability to pay your other bills. Interest and penalties still accrue. 4) Installment payment plan: If you owe less than $50K in taxes, you should usually be able to get an installment payment plan of up to 72 months, simply by asking for it. 5) Negotiate: this is NOT something to try on your own. We can help, but the number of "Offers in Compromise" that get accepted each year are quite small and a knowledge of how the system works is important. 6) Using existing credit sources (credit card, HELOC, private loans): some tax advisors would quickly recommend this, but I would NOT recommend you go this route. If you've exhausted the options above, do this instead: 7) Sell something you don't need anymore. Always a pretty good plan anyway.

This is a topic that ought to stir up some conversation: What do you think of the idea of Unlimited Paid Time Off? We'd love to hear your perspective, both from employees and business owners.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 14.03.2020

We're in the final week, everyone. Taxes are due next Monday. --> If we are waiting on your final paperwork, please bring it in ASAP. --> If you haven't yet started your taxes, give us a call. If we can't fit you in this week, we'll file an extension for you and get it filed on time after the smoke clears. Don't rush to file and make mistakes you'll have to fix later. Extensions are free and simple.... --> If your taxes are filed already, grab yourself a cookie and put your feet up! :) Which category are you in? Tell us in the comments!

IRS business audits are often not initiated at random. The IRS will likely audit businesses with glaring errors from business taxes filed the year before (i.e. when they sense something is up). These tax audits cover a number of areas such as employment and income tax. They are comprehensive and not something to take lightly. A professional service, like the one we provide, is something you should commission were an audit to happen.

We just heard this morning that Congress is (right now) considering a tax on text messages! The question of how they will track those messages is sure to unearth a flurry of lawsuits over privacy concerns. Can you believe it?! Well ... don't. Because then you might get called an April Fool. Happy April Fools' Day everyone!

Whenever the IRS challenges your tax filing, the burden of producing evidence that your claims are true rests entirely with you, so you had better have your documentation in order. When you can’t produce material evidence of your claim, you’re going to need some help to navigate what comes next. We can help if you're on either side of the ball... (And speaking of basketball, how is your team faring?)

When wondering about what you can deduct as a business expense, ask yourself this question first: "Is it ordinary and necessary?" If the answer is yes, there's a very good chance you can deduct it. But we'd need to discuss a few caveats to give you an official yes or no...

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 27.11.2019

If you haven't filed a tax return in the last few years because you're afraid of owing money, your fears may be ungrounded. There is $1.4B (yes, billion) in unclaimed tax refund money sitting at the IRS that could be yours. And if you don't file your 2015 return by this April 15, that refund will be gone forever.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 18.11.2019

Why are you procrastinating? 24 days left to file! Get your refund coming.

When it comes to deductions, recordkeeping is key. Being audited is ALWAYS a possibility (especially for small business owners), and you'll be glad later that you can prove your numbers are concrete.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 28.10.2019

On this first day of spring, here's a financial item to put on your spring cleaning list: Logon to your online banking and download your monthly statements for the past year (or however long it's been since you last did so). The bank won't keep these records forever, but they are something you should have. The rising trend of paperless statements means you likely don't have a bulging file cabinet at home with papers from the bank, but that doesn't mean you won't need these records. (And of course, be sure to backup those records on an additional external hard drive.)

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 08.10.2019

If you turned 70 1/2 in 2018, you are required to start taking payments from IRAs and workplace retirement plans by April 1. There are some exceptions, so give us a call if you want to know about your specific situation. http://bit.ly/2TzZ9tK

Start a new business last year? Will the IRS think so too? There are actually 9 factors that the IRS uses to determine if you have a business. We can help you figure this out and get things ordered properly on your tax return.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 16.09.2019

What would your financial situation -- both personal and business -- look like in a year if you applied this principle to all of your financial decisions?

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 30.08.2019

We know many adults in that season of life where taking care of their aging parents has become a primary concern. Tax help is available, but the rules have changed a bit with the TCJA this year. The adult dependent exemption is gone, but a new family tax credit is available. Take a look at the requirements, and be sure to bring this up when you come in for your tax filing.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 21.08.2019

As softwares and auditors expand their reach, time is running out for businesses to figure out and enact sales tax requirements for their remote sales. If your business needs help determining the new tax obligations, we're here for you.

Can your tax software do this? ;)

If you need a new car but have unpaid tax debt, it's going to be very difficult to get a car loan. A home loan will be even more tricky. You'll have to deal with your tax problems first. We can help.

Thinking of self-filing this year? Take a look at this first...

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 27.07.2019

Tax Deadline Alert for Businesses: Big tax deadline coming in about a week on March 15 for Partnerships and S Corporations. Is this you? Are you ready? Call us for any last-minute help you might need.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 13.07.2019

Yes, you can take the increased standard deduction this year. But what if your calculations are wrong and there is much more that you can do? And then, of course, there is STATE filing to think of -- you might be better served to itemize (or you may not be allowed to, or it won’t save you.) But you won't know unless you do your research -- OR ask a professional for help.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 30.06.2019

41 days until the tax deadline... (But who's counting?) ;)

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 21.06.2019

These are all good, safe targets to aim for when starting your own biz. HOWEVER, there is still something to be said for jumping into the deep end and being forced to swim ... or sink.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 03.06.2019

The IRS does provide an outlet to answer important tax questions you might have. The problem? There is only a 3.5 month window for you to ask those questions. And picking up the phone to call the IRS is kinda like going to the beach without packing any sunscreen (i.e. "I probably know what's gonna happen here but maybe it won't be that bad"). Although touted as a "toll-free" service, the over-the-phone option is often hard to navigate, and can lead to frustrating hold times. So what's an alternative? SOLUTION: Work with a human. One you know and trust. You can call us right this second with any questions you might have. Important tax questions arise throughout the year ... not 3.5 months at a time.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 24.05.2019

News update: it’s time to file your taxes again. You’ve got 6 weeks until the filing deadline, so work with a professional this year to see if you can keep more in your pockets.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 18.05.2019

Big tax deadline coming up on Friday, March 1 for farmers and fishermen: File Form 1040 and pay any tax due. However, you have until Apr. 15 to file if you paid your 2018 estimated tax payments by Jan. 15 this year. Contact us with any question or for last-minute help.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 05.05.2019

This one probably speaks for itself. ;)

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 20.04.2019

This is a bit self-serving, but it needs to be said: Be very careful entrusting your tax preparation to software. We can't tell you how many returns we've corrected over the years, in which the money "saved" by not using a pro was MUCH less than what we were able to find unclaimed within the returns. Just a thought for you with tax season in full swing...

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 01.04.2019

If you receive suspicious IRS-related scam or phishing emails, you can protect your identity (and probably save another's) by forwarding them immediately to [email protected]. Pass it on!

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 28.03.2019

We thought these tax write-offs were very savvy (or ridiculous, depending on your point of view).

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 17.03.2019

Under the TCJA, working men and women who are not incorporated, like farmers, might be liable to excess business loss limitations. Excess business losses are total deductions attributable to trades or businesses exceeding total gross income and gains plus $250,000. Translation: This means you might not be able to claim as many losses as in years past.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 11.03.2019

If you haven’t thought about taxes since last April, it’s time to gear up again. A lot has changed since last year, and some of you might not want to itemize if you have in the past. We can ask the right questions to get to the right answer.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 22.02.2019

If you're not sure what paperwork to bring to your tax appointment, please give us a call and we can help you out with that. :)

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 04.02.2019

Tis the season when procrastinators unite ... to file their taxes at the last possible minute. How big of a procrastinator are YOU?? ;) (mild language warning)

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 19.01.2019

There's a lot more to the new Section 199A pass-through deduction for businesses than we can put into a Facebook post. So here's a deep dive into the nitty gritty ... OR you can talk to us to see where you fit into it all.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 09.01.2019

While you're in for your tax appointment this year and thinking about all things financial, check off two birds with one stone. See which of these we can get in place for your 2019 taxes.

Un-Tax-Able, Inc. 02.01.2019

Since there has been some back and forth on the meals deduction for businesses, we want to help clarify what is actually allowable. Under the new law, you may continue to deduct 50% of the price on business-related meals as long as the taxpayer is present. However, the meals cannot be labeled "lavish or extravagant" so go ahead and skip the escargot. (Shouldn't you anyway?) You can apply this law to current or potential customers as well as clients or other business connections.
