Week of Lung Cancer Vigil Patient Spotlight: Joe is a husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, motorcycle enthusiast, and lover of life! Joe’s life changed on Nov. 6, 2019, when he was told that he had lung cancer. He had been feeling tired and under the weather and thought that he had the flu. He started to have difficulty breathing and went to the ER, where they found out that he had a collapsed lung and a tumor the size of a fist. Joe began meeting with specialists at Upstate, to m...ap his course of treatment. Joe began his treatment of radiation and chemotherapy, and finished his treatment in April 2020. Joe’s tumor shrunk and he is back to doing what he loves; riding his Harley Davidson with his wife, watching his German Shephard’s run, shopping with his granddaughter, and renovating his house. After his diagnosis, Joe quit smoking cold turkey. Joe said, The scary word of cancer made me stop my 38 years of smoking immediately. I am continuing treatment at the Upstate Cancer Center, and when I am there, the smoking cessation specialist visits with me. Upstate Cancer Center made the scary into hopeful and positive. The atmosphere is not depressing, always positive and uplifting. The staff are awesome, they made it easy, and they have the best Lorna Doone cookies! See more
Week of Lung Cancer Vigil Patient Spotlight: Monica Ruiz started smoking when she was a teenager due to peer pressure. Over the years Monica has quit smoking and started again more times than she can count. She first tried the nicotine gum and did not like the taste. Monica believes her biggest issue quitting is having difficulty finding a healthy habit to replace the smoking habit. She recently had her first Low-dose CT lung scan through the Upstate We Matter lung cancer screening program. Fortunately the results were negative for cancer. Monica is currently working with Upstate smoking cessation specialists to quit the habit of smoking for good.
