Congratulations to CPT David Fobar, MAJ Logan Phillips, MAJ Andrew Wilhelm, and COL Pete Chapman on presenting at the 2020 IEEE nuclear Science Symposium. Their research, entitled Considerations for Training an Artificial Neural Network for Particle-type Identification, explored the impact of various training datasets on overall network accuracy. This marriage between machine learning and nuclear radiation detection proves to be aN area of great interest. We are proud to have our excellent faculty taking part in exploring this frontier!

PANE FRIENDS AND FAMILY! Recently, GEN John Raymond, the very first Chief of Space Operations of the U.S. Space Force, took a tour at our House of PANE! (1st Pic) CDTs Muffett, Catina, Michels, Parsons, and Fitzsimmons presented their capstone project on development of an initial entry mapping and radiation localization system. (2nd Pic) Cadets Jerod Warren, Adrian Garlant, Collin Combs showed GEN Raymond the water moderated sub-critical assembly and explained their capstone ...project to install a graphite moderated sub-critical assembly in the same room. (3rd Pic) CDTs Kemp, Bush, and Debzak briefed the General on the USMA Space Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD) program. The MIAD is the Army Basic Space Cadre Course which awards qualified cadets the 3Y, space cadre, identifier as well as the basic space badge. (4th Pic) GEN Raymond had the opportunity observe Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter through Department’s observatory! CDT Chelsea Grogan and CDT Jacob Willis explained some of the features of the observatory’s main telescope. (5th Pic) What do an Army officer and a Space Force general officer have in common? PHYSICS IS BEAUTIFUL! CDT Bryce Bauer (D3, ’24) was the winner of the first ‘Own a Wall in Bartlett Hall’ art competition with a submission of an untethered astronaut falling backward into a massive black hole. Seen from the reflection of his visor, is a US Space Shuttle. Ric’s most memorable experience within the department was his AIAD at Sandia National Laboratories near Albuquerque, NM. It was an amazing experience and opened my eyes to the... applications of physics. AMAZING!
