The Casio Loopy is a hard to find console that was only released in Japan. It was marketed to a female gamer audience and it has some unique games and accessories. The Magical Shop is a rare add-on that gives the Loopy the ability to capture still images from other composite video sources, but nowadays these accessories are typically broken. Once open, it was clear from the smell of electrolyte that at least some of the capacitors were bad. The caps were replaced and that's all it took to get this rare accessory working! The NES RGB mod has been the gold standard for getting the best quality analog video from the NES, but it always required drilling holes into the console for new AV connectors. On this Fix It Friday we will walk you through a new NES RGB mod that doesn't involve cutting the shell at all! https://youtu.be/_xz6iy2H0Nw The NES I/O board is a replacement for the power daughterboard that has RGB and S-video ports in place of the rf modulator. The original board is removed and replaced with the NES I/O, and connections are made between the NES RGB and the NES I/O. The final results are amazing - the NES has composite, s-video, and RGB with no cutting of the console required! In-game reset and palette swapping is managed with a button combo. The Phillips CDI is a quirky multimedia device from the 90s that is infamous for it's officially licensed Zelda and Mario games. Despite it's bad reputation, there are a number of fun and interesting games to check out. Getting RGB video from the CDI is relatively easy in some models but until recently was not possible with the 400/500 series of the console. The original Xbox is home to many outstanding games and offered forward-thinking features, including progressive video resolutions and Xbox Live. These days, getting the best video signal from an Xbox can be tricky as component video options can be expensive and modern displays add latency when converting analog to digital video. The Sega Nomad is a handheld version of the Sega Genesis that was released in the mid 90s. A popular mod for this console is to replace the screen with a modern TFT display, but until recently these screens only output composite video. On this week's Fix It Friday we will show you how to install an LCDDRV, which provides crisp RGB video output on the Sega Nomad! https://youtu.be/TOsQF8Qcqp4 The LCDDRV board is mounted in a 3D printed bracket and an adapter board by Mobius Str...ip Tech is soldered into place to provide proper RGB output. From there, power, RGB, and sync are soldered to their respective places on the Nomad motherboard. Lastly, Sega CD audio functionality was added by installing a few resistors and capacitors to the main audio chip. The Sega Nomad is a portable version of the Sega Genesis that was released in 1995. It's great to play Genesis games on the go but this console has a few limitations, especially the original backlit screen. On this Fix it Friday we will show you a few mods to make your Nomad better than ever! https://youtu.be/rf7dcQV3MhA The original Nomad screen can be removed and replaced with a modern TFT screen. This screen is more crisp than the original and is held in place with a 3D ...printed mounting bracket. Lastly, the Nomad can be modified to have compatibility with Sega Master System games. A small wire is soldered between the main ASIC chip and a pin on the cartridge slot. Master system games can be played with an adapter or with a flash cartridge. The Sharp SF-1 television is a TV with a built-in Super Famicom (SNES) that was only released in Japan. These TVs are extremely rare, especially in North America, and this one no longer output video. We have already fixed an SF-1 before, and we were pleasantly surprised to get another one for repair! On this Fix it Friday we will get this Super Famicom fully restored. https://youtu.be/F2PTQZ188y0 The Super Famicom sits directly above the CRT and can easily be removed once the... monitor is safely discharged. This logic board had two bad capacitors which had leaked all over the board and damaged some traces. The board was cleaned and new caps were installed, but video was still not working. The SF-1 has an internal S-video connection to the Super Famicom, so a logic probe was used to trace out the luma and chroma circuits. The luma connection to the TV was severed but this was fixed with a bodge wire. This TV has been fully restored and you will be able to see it for yourself at the next Long Island Retro Gaming Expo! Third party console shells can improve the aesthetic of your handheld consoles, or can be used to replace original damaged shells. However, the quality of 3rd party shells can be very unpredictable. The Super Nintendo is one of the best consoles of the 16-bit era, but earlier hardware revisions of the console are prone to failure. The CPUs and PPUs (Picture Processing Unit) fail over time, leading to black screens and missing graphics/colors. On this week's Fix It Friday, we will diagnose and repair a SNES with bad colors. https://youtu.be/M4AVL5FJmWU Testing with an SNES Burn-in Cartridge and the 240p Test Suite revealed that the color blue was missing. An oscilloscope was used to trace the problem back to the PPU2 chip. From there, a low-melt solder was applied to the chip and a heat gun was used to remove it. Finally a replacement PPU2 was soldered in place. Replacing the PPU2 resolved all the issues, and now this SNES is working perfectly again!

The SNES Jr. was the final version of the Super Nintendo that was released in 1997. Although it is a cost-reduced version with no RF output or RGB, this system can output some of the highest quality video with some minor modifications. Tabletop Game & Watches are early handheld gaming devices that allowed you to play some arcade classics on the go. This Game and Watch had very corroded battery terminals that can't easily be replaced. On this Fix It Friday we will use some chemistry to repair them and get this Game & Watch working again! https://youtu.be/AslxG22g8Co First I created an electroplating solution by applying a low voltage to 2 pieces of nickel that were submerged in a solution of white vinegar an...d salt. Once the plating solution was ready, I attached the battery terminals to the anode and placed them in the solution. The nickel ions bonded to the battery terminals - this made them electrically conductive again and protects them from tarnishing in the future. The Panasonic Q is the holy grail for GameCube collectors - it has an aesthetic that is unique when compared to all other versions of the GameCube. Unfortunately they suffer from a number of issues including broken drive belts and faulty lasers. On this Fix it Friday we will show you how to repair a Panasonic Q laser and install a region switch so that you can play North American games! https://youtu.be/Inwltjke7YE The Q is very challenging to disassemble but with careful wor...k you can eventually reach the motherboard. The region switch is installed between two resistors near the main CPU. To repair the laser, a potentiometer needs to be adjusted on the laser to increase its output strength. The Sega Genesis model 3 was the final version of the Genesis released in North America, under license by Majesco. This version has several features that were removed to reduce cost, including compatibility with Sega Master System games, the 32x, Game Genie, and a few Genesis titles including Virtua Racing. On this week's Fix It Friday we will show you a few modifications that can restore this functionality! https://youtu.be/oUInfmMG2h8 Several wires need to be soldered betw...een the Genesis 3 cartridge slot and its main ASIC chip. Fortunately, there is space between the cart slot and the motherboard to allow for easy connections on the top side of the motherboard. Finally, 32x audio is added on the underside of the console using two 75 ohm resistors. Once these mods are complete the Genesis 3 has most of the same features of its earlier counterparts! See more

The Sharp Nintendo Game Television is a combination TV and NES that was released in North America and Japan in the late 80s. This one had a broken foot and the NES would not read games. On this Fix it Friday we will go through a complete teardown and get this rare NES working again! https://youtu.be/Ak_2G5RsEeY The plastic on this television is very brittle and it's common for the feet to snap off over time. Thankfully the feet can easily be reattached using a compound of ba...king soda and cyanoacrylate glue ("crazy glue"). Disassembly of the TV only requires a screwdriver but it is challenging because of the connections between the TV and the NES. The NES is a modified version of the frontloader PCB and this one was covered in filth so that games were not reading. After a thorough cleaning and a new 72 pin connector, the TV was reassembled and everything worked perfectly! Check out this rare system for yourself at the next Long Island Retro Gaming Expo!
