Mastic Beach Village 14.11.2020

The 2017-18 Village property tax bills have been mailed as of May 31, 2017. Pursuant to New York State law, Village taxes are due and payable between June 1, 2017, and July 1, 2017, inclusive, without penalty. Payments may be made by mail, online (by check or credit card) and in person at Village Hall, 369 Neighborhood Road, Mastic Beach, New York 11951 (between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday except for holidays). Effective July 2, 2017, penalties and... fees for unpaid taxes are 5% during the month of July 2017 and 1% for each month thereafter. All Village taxes and fees unpaid as of October 1, 2017, will be transmitted to the Town of Brookhaven Assessor's Office for collection on the 2017-18 Brookhaven Town tax bill with potential, additional penalties, fines and interest added. ASSERTIONS THAT VILLAGE TAXES NEED NOT BE PAID DURING THE DISSOLUTION PROCESS ARE FALSE. Additionally, as required by New York State law, the Board of Trustees in April 2017 was required to adopt a full year’s budget for the new fiscal year that commenced on June 1, 2017. The law does not permit the proration of Village tax bills. Accordingly, any and all unencumbered funds that may be available after the Village’s dissolution date (December 31, 2017) will be used to reduce the Village’s debt (most notably to pay off scheduled bond principal and interest payments resulting from the purchase several years ago of the Village Hall building and to settle pending litigation against the Village). Unencumbered funds are those that may be available after all outstanding bills received after January 1, 2018, for expenses the Village incurred on or before December 31, 2017, are paid.

Some community groups and members decided to decorate the tree located on a piece of Village property that had recently been 'dismantled' There were post holes, pieces of metal sticking up out of the ground and other potential dangers that required cleaning up. The Village Board was never aware of the Tree lighting plan until the day before it was to occur. Questions arose as to the safety and liability concerns as well as whether any formal request was submitted by said gr...oups. The Mayor advised one or more groups or group members that the decorating could not go on as planned and proceeded to have the property cleared in anticipation of a formal request that would include proof of liability. (As is done with ANY lawful public gathering/fair/celebration on Village property). Yet somehow these facts have been distorted on social media and in email blasts that seem to indicate that the Village Board is trying to stop the Mayor, the many community groups and even the local newspaper from enjoying holiday festivities on Main Street. Mayor Miller as chief officer of the Village discussed this thoroughly with his Board and Attorney and everyone is supportive and awaiting the formal request and proof of insurance from whatever group is hosting the event. Any discussion or statements to the contrary are categorically FALSE.
