Titled Over 300 Million Served and dating from 2019, this earthenware vessel is the creation of ceramic artist Courtney Leonard and satirical painter Frank Hyde. Affectionately called Notorious R.B.G., Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg (19332020) is shown wearing her signature lace jabot and a three-pointed, gold crown. The latter is a reference to two other Brooklyn-born personalities: artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (19601988), who used such crowns in his paintings, and rapper ...Biggie Smalls (19721997), also known as, The Notorious B.I.G., who was photographed wearing such a crown cocked to one side. :x: Walk About New York’s guided walking tours [https://wp.me/P47lL1-VP] bring you history, art, and a bit of fun. First lighting up the sky six months after 9/11 and then every year since, from dusk to dawn, on the night of September 11, Tribute in Light is a commemorative public art installation. :x: Soaring heavenward, not from the Memorial Pools at the 9/11 Memorial, but from the roof of the Battery Parking Garage, a few blocks south of the 9/11 Memorial, each beam reaches four miles into the air. Each tower of light is generated by eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs arrang...ed into two 48-foot squares, reminiscent of the shape and positioning of the Twin Towers. Seen from a 60-mile radius from Lower Manhattan, Tribute in Light is made possible by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and the Rechler Philanthropy. :x: Our Downtown Manhattan Walking Tour [https://wp.me/P47lL1-202] includes a stop at the 9/11 Memorial. Donated by Dr. Albert and Margarita Waxman, The Shield is part of the permanent art collection at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in Lower Manhattan. It is Charles ‘Red’ Grooms’ only artwork inspired by the attack on the Twin Towers, and honors the men and women who responded to the day’s events. :x: Shaped like a police officer’s badge, the enamel on epoxy artwork makes reference to the well-known photo by Thomas Franklin of three firefighters raising an American flag at Ground Z...ero. In addition, hardhat-wearing recovery workers and city officials, military and law enforcement personnel are depicted. :x: A native of Nashville, TN, Mr. Grooms has lived in New York since 1957. Living only a mile from Ground Zero, Mr. Grooms and his wife could see the World Trade Center from their apartment. Mr. Grooms’ nickname, Red came to him while studying with the artist Hans Hofmann at his school in Provincetown, RI. :x: Our Downtown Manhattan Walking Tour [https://wp.me/P47lL1-202] includes a stop at the 9/11 Memorial. Commissioned by First Republic Bank, Kelsey Montague’s mural, What Lifts You (#WhatLiftsYou) covers the rear wall of a 19th-century tenement that faces the High Line, NYC’s elevated park. :x: Using hearts that morph into wings, the artist’s intent is to bring happiness to people, inspiring them to fly with their hopes and dreams. Tucked in amongst the shapes are classic Big Apple sights: the Statue of Liberty, a yellow taxi, Broadway’s comedy and tragedy masks, the city’s s...kyline, even a martini glass. Bottoms up! :x: Located near the West 30th Street and 10th Avenue entrance to the High Line, What Lifts You is a big, bright, bold bit of happiness. :x: Trust Walk About New York to bring you the best of New York City. If you love New York, it was #OnThisDate, September 8th, in 1664 that it became New York when Peter Stuyvesant handed over New Amsterdam to the English. They changed the name to New York in honor of James, Duke of York, brother of King Charles II and future James II. This excellent bronze example of the Seal of the City of New York shows us the date it happened!
