We at the Town of Wallkill Police are committed to the safety and well-being of the residents and visitors of the Town. As the Holiday Season is in full swing, we would like to point out a few things. First, we have seen an uptick in vehicle larcenies. While we have diligently increased our patrols through residential and commercial neighborhoods, we cannot be everywhere. We have noticed a couple of common factors when it comes to vehicle larcenies. One being the vehicle was... left UNLOCKED. Please remember to lock your vehicles when parked even if it is just for a few moments. Second is leaving valuable items or items that appear to contain valuables in plain sight. Please secure these items either in the glove compartment, center console or in the trunk. This holds especially true if you are shopping in one of our great shopping centers. If you have to put purchases in your vehicle and then return to shopping, please secure these purchases in your trunk. Lastly, a major concern is the numerous phone scams that have been occurring. This includes the IRS Scam where people pose as IRS agents stating your Social Security Number has been suspended or you owe back taxes. The IRS will NEVER contact you via the telephone and request you pay them in any form of gift card. No legitimate business will request to be paid via a payment other than traditional forms. They will not ask for American Express Gift Cards, ITunes Gift Cards or Amazon Gift Cards. They will also not request you Western Union any form of payment. The Utility companies will not randomly call saying if you do not pay your bill immediately they will shut off your services. No person buying a product will send you more money than needed and requesting you deposit the money into your account and re-transfer money back to him or her. If you do receive a check from someone, simply wait until the check clears before you make and transaction with them. If you have any questions or have some sort of suspicion in regards to the legitimacy of someone requesting money or personal information from you, please don’t hesitate to contact the Town of Wallkill Police Department 845-692-6757. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and would be happy to answer your questions.

SCAMS FLOURISH AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES: ‘Tis the season for scams, in part because the holidays are fast approaching and consumers are using more online sites for purchasing gifts. Scammers are eager to delude consumers with a variety of scams during the holidays. The Town of Wallkill Police warns that scammers often call or send fraudulent emails, impersonate utility company employees, either on the phone or by showing up on your doorstep. They might tell consumers... their service is about to be shut off unless they pay a surcharge, or they may try to sell a worthless device to lower heating bills. Fraudulent Online websites or emails may ask you to confirm your personal information due to your account being compromised or may request you to send money. Consumers are encouraged to notify the company directly to report such activity. Please be safe and aware of these scams as you celebrate the holidays.
