Today by Mary Oliver Today I’m flying low and I’m not saying a word... I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep. The world goes on as it must, the bees in the garden rumbling a little, the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten. And so forth. But I’m taking the day off. Quiet as a feather. I hardly move though really I’m traveling a terrific distance. Stillness. One of the doors into the temple. I love this poem. There's much to be seen in the mind and in the heart if we slow down.
It's OK to slow it down. Focus not only on the quality of your physical being but on the quality of your mind and spirit.
On Wednesdays I'm adding an additional location in Williamsville. I'll be in the office Lakeshore Chiropractic starting January 29, 2020. I'm still downtown-just adding a new site. The new address is 1829 Maple Rd (corner of Ayer) Suite 110.
A nice story about sport and self worth.
Some very simple steps to maintain and improve brain health.
Sick of winter and ready to start walking outside again? Make sure you keep up a good pace and let your arms naturally swingwith the elbows straight. Faster walking with an upright posture is better for your spine’s health since compressive loads are better dissipated.
While spring yard clean up can be a minefield for the spine it’s also and opportunity to practice basic movement patterns that spare the low back. Learn how to hinge, squat and lunge correctly and how to apply these techniques to lifting, raking and hauling around the yard and home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn-TZKYkDuU
I like the author’s perspective on how the physician and physical therapist can best heal (as opposed to cure), chronic pain. Our most powerful tools are listening and compassion.
A sure way to give your back a measure of protection for day to day activity and when physically training is a dose of lumbar stabilization work, specifically the Big 3 as described by Pr. Stuart McGill PhD. Approximately 10-15 minutes of this regimen can provide up to 2 hours of spinal stiffness when the back is under load. Check out the book Gift of Injury by McGill and Carroll for a detailed description of these exercises and look for coaching at Walter Brown Physical Therapy to make sure your performance is spot-on.
I’m looking forward to offering Graston Technique to my friends at Love In Motion Yoga and Power Yoga Buffalo this month. It’s always a pleasure and honor to work with those who value movement as the cornerstone of health!
