A ten-acre walled garden in south-central England, Malverleys has a Victorian mansion almost as old as Wave Hill House and a profusion of garden spaces, including a stumpery--feeling stumped?--all tended by our first speaker in Wave Hill's 2021 Horticultural Lecture Series--on Zoom this year. It's only a week away, so do make your reservations soon: bit.ly/3p3pnjS Photo by Matthew Reese.
The gardens are clothed in deep expanses of white, with long, low shadows cast by the winter suna still, cool landscape until a bird calls far overhead. What a moment for experiencing the season!
The New York Times touts Wave Hill as THE place to be this season: "This oasis in the Bronx triggers one of those 'Am-I-really-in-New-York?' moments. The answer: Yes, yes, you are." Just ahead: music, stargazing and more fill Summer Evenings, starting June 26: www.wavehill.org/summerevenings
We're back at the Herb Garden this week to explore edible and medicinal plants with Great Performances Chef Aya Mohamed and Wave Hill Gardener Harnek Singh. Watch Chef Aya use freshly harvested vegetables and herbs to cook up her colorful Swiss Chard, Beet and Fennel Salad recipe. Thanks to Great Performances for a delicious treat! bit.ly/2HGVZjO
Thanks to artist Frances Palmer for hosting a special virtual workshop for our Leadership Council and loyal donors. Here are some of the stunning arrangements participants made using tips from Frances. We're so grateful to be able to share and celebrate Frances' work and for our generous supporters who make everything possible.
The impressive show of foliage is an annual joy for us at Wave Hill! Experience it for yourself on a guided fall foliage walk through the gardens: bit.ly/37Bg2Lc
Sunroom Project Space artist Gracelee Lawrence talks with Curator of Visual Arts Eileen Jeng Lynch about Lawrence’s exhibition The Other Escapes, the Ones You Can Open in Yourself on the lawn behind Glyndor Gallery. Lawrence’s sculptural fountain explores the relationship between the body, propagated plants and technologyconnections between humans and the natural worldas well as the sociopolitical histories of gardens. On top of a pedestal is a yellow-green biocyborg comprising a human-like body lying over its knees, a single dangling arm, its head a flowering angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia) drooping toward a basin of water, and a tail that resembles the plant’s stem.
We kicked off the first #ConEdSTEM Days Out session this week, a virtual exploration of our woodland. Students used videos and camera trap images to learn about the different mammals that call NYC their home and the adaptations that allow them to thrive here.
Traditional fabrication methods, the myth of Narcissus and angel's trumpet (Brugmansia) are reinterpreted in Gracelee Lawrence's outdoor sculpture. Join Lawrence and Wave Hill Curator Eileen Jeng Lynch on Thu, Oct 22 at 2PM as they discuss virtually this first outdoor Sunroom Project Space commission: bit.ly/35muVhE
