Meet our December featured customer Anne Skoch, Founder/CEO of Anne Cate. Anne learned how to sew from her mother when she was a young girl. She loved the idea of bringing a creative idea to life with her hands. As a thirteen-year-old, she got her first sewing machine. It took her creating to the next level, discovering that she could make money from the products she created. Meet Anna Ricci, Head Tailor at Charbel's Tuxedos & Tailoring, and our featured customer for November. Our featured customer for October is Nicholas Scialdone, Head Tailor at Sall-Stearns Fine Men's Clothing and Tailoring. At the age of 7, Nicholas used to watch tailors in the window of their shops doing repairs, custom work, and alterations. He thought that was the kind of education he'd like to have to allow him to help support his family. He has been a tailor for 66 years. Our featured customer for July is Ben Sidden, Head Tailor at Alteration Specialists. Ben grew up in a family of dressmakers and tailors. He has honed his craft, and now focuses on being a people person to take care of them the best way he knows how so that they feel right at home. Always around a sewing machine, he keeps pushing himself to be the best at what he does. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and too many more who have suffered so greatly and paid the ultimate price.... WAWAK stands with those who are speaking up against systemic racism and injustice.

Our May featured customer profile is on Vongie Newman, Owner & Head Seamstress at Sew More Couture. "I’ve been sewing since I was 14 and am self-taught. No one in my family can sew so there is nowhere to get training. So I read a lot of books and had a lot of trial and error... Growing up I did not have any money and wanted to wear the latest designs, so I decided to make my own."

On behalf of all the employees at WAWAK, we are proud to announce that through our WAWAK Cares Program, we contributed to hundreds of people and organizations across the country who, on the their own time, are making masks and gowns to help front line health care workers who are in great need of these items. In this challenging time, we couldn’t be more pleased to have products that can truly help make a difference. Unfortunately, we only wish we had more! Our donation stock has been exhausted, and we regret that we are unable to fulfill any additional requests at this time.

Back before the pandemic, we were lucky enough to visit with Louise Heisey, Owner & Fabric Engineer at SeamWorks. "I consider myself to be a fabric engineer. At SeamWorks, we work on a wide variety of projects which involve problem solving and figuring out the best way to cut, sew, pattern and manipulate our materials to create the final product. I’ve been accumulating skills my entire career by experimenting and building on previous experiences."

This month our featured customer profile is Abigail Asante, Owner and Master Tailor at Devine Sewing & Fabrics. She found her passion for sewing after years of it waiting for her... "My husband bought me my first sewing machine over 30 years ago and it sat there for about 8 years before I ever used it. One day I decided to make a pillowcase and before I knew it, I became very passionate about sewing. From then on I would buy clothes from the thrift store, take them apart and try to put them back together. It helped me become the seamstress I am today."

February is finally here and so is another featured customer profile. Hear from David Burdick, Costume Director at Baltimore Center Stage Costume Shop. We asked him What advice do you give to the next generation of designers? "I think it’s really important to have a foundation in construction and fit. As a young designer you often have to construct things yourself and you are not always fortunate to work with people who are as talented as the BCS costume staff, so the more you know, the more successful your designs will be realized."

New year, new customer profile! We spoke to Ilya Fatakov, Owner and Master Tailor at Arel Studio. They have been hard at work on some brand new Broadway shows. In the last few years they have also expanded to movies and films. "We have very loyal customers. Designers have worked with us for years and always come back."
